VP debate to be analyzed by OUS students

Published Wednesday, October 1, 2008

Staff report

Ohio University Southern students, faculty, staff and the public will gather in the Bowman Auditorium in the Collins Center on OUS campus to watch the upcoming, nationally televised debates between the vice presidential candidates and the presidential candidates.

“We have arranged to have the broadcast put up on our giant screen in the Bowman and we plan to analyze the messages, techniques and rhetoric of the various debaters. This will be an exercise in listening and analysis rather than shouting political logos or epitaphs,” said David Lucas, associate professor of communication studies at Ohio University Southern.

The first debate, the vice presidential debate, will occur on Thursday. Participants will gather in the Bowman Auditorium at 8:30 p.m. The topic for the first debate involves domestic and foreign policy. Students from across the disciplines will be in attendance. Dr. V. Patrick Bell, another communication instructor commented, “We anticipate interested parties to join our communication classes in the auditorium for a stimulating evening of message and rhetoric.”

The second presidential debate will occur on Tuesday. and employ a town-hall format. The debaters will cover issues raised by the audience members in attendance at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee and by Internet participants. Dr. Lucas injected, “Students will bring their laptops to the debate and submit questions via the Internet during the debate. We hope they read one of our student’s questions.” The audience will meet together at 8:30 p.m. on this night also.

“Another interesting element to be employed during these two debate events,” declared Lucas, “will be the electronic clickers we will use in the audience to gauge immediate reaction. With these electronic gadgets,” explained Lucas, “we can monitor the feedback and responses of the audience participants and gather important perception data.” Both events will be held in the Bowman Auditorium.

Ohio University Southern requests that political partisanship be kept more personal during this event and that attendees refrain from wearing partisan t-shirts and avoid audible chants, cheers or slogans. Signs and posters are prohibited on the University property. “We welcome the public,” commented Lucas, “but we ask that everyone remember we’re approaching this as an academic learning experience.”

John McCain gave a speech today and just about when he was finished, his left eye started blinking, and his left lip purched up. His speech was slurred and he was confused and disoriented when he tried to leave the stage.

So, I ask you--is someone as incompetent as Sarah Palin qualified to lead this country in the event McCain is incapacitated? It looked to me like he is suffering mini-strokes. If it is that, combined with his serious diagnosis of cancer, people need to realize Palin is undeniably not qualified to be President.

osu .... Can't you find anything better to complain about McCain? McCain's medical records were released and his doctors report he is in good medical condition. I sure the heck would vote for an old man with a twitch in his eye than some deceiver that wants to be the next Fuehrer.

I'm not complaining; I'm merely suspecting he suffers from mini-strokes, and he has picked a moron to take his place in the event he cannot continue his term of office.

For crying out loud, Palin cannot name a single newspaper she reads.

I have checked FoxNews, MSNBC, ABCNews, CBSNews, CNN and nothing is mentioned about this so called McCain health crisis/problem.

If Palin blows this debate I will come back on here and declare her to be a "moron" as you say ... but that isn't going to happen ....

Secondly, even if Palin blows it ... I am still not supporting the Fuehrer.

Posted by osu (anonymous) on October 1, 2008 at 1:24 p.m. (Suggest removal)

But you do support the Fuehrer--Bush and McCain.

Palin won't "blow" it because I heard on the radio this morning that both candidates have the questions already. If that is the case, then this isn't really a "debate."

As for McCain's health--just watch the video. The left side of his face is clearly convulsing, and he is confused when he tries to exit the stage. His speech seems slurred as well. Something is wrong with him, and I am not playing politics.

I watched the video osu ... I am not as ignorant as some might want you to think ... there are a lot of things that could account for some old man's eye twitching ...

and your attempts to link Bush and McCain are not successful ... yes ... go ahead and say that McCain voted with Bush 90% of the time or what ever number you are now using ... you can say the same thing with the Fuehrer and his voting record.

If both candidates have the questions then I say call off the debates for thursday, throw out the moderator Gwen Ifil and reschedule them with Jim Lehrer as moderator.

It's not a normal condition for one's eye to twitch and the left side of a face to convulse. It could be as simple as McCain keeping his anger inside (it's widely known he has an anger-management problem), or it could be melanoma spreading to other parts of his body.

Why throw out Ifil? I figure McCain's people will find a reason to stop the VP debates; they tried last week.

osu, why do you hate whitey so much?

Posted by SteveLeach (anonymous) on October 1, 2008 at 2:18 p.m. (Suggest removal)

hey osu of course they have the questions already, how do you think obama survives because he has shown some nice babbling incoherency when he tries to talk off the cuff and so does biden. Why do you think obama would not agree to any town hall forums because he doesnt want people to realize how without a clue he is

Posted by osu (anonymous) on October 1, 2008 at 2:21 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Obama and McCain didn't have the questions. The VP's supposedly have them.

I think Obama speaks very well "off the cuff," and Biden is excellent. Both of the Democratic candidates are good speakers, who have an understanding of what is happening in the world today. And polling after Friday's debates indicate that, as Obama has taken the lead in the key swingstates, including having an 8 point lead in the Quinipiac University poll released this afternoon.

Gwen Ifil is a horrible choice as moderator of this debate. She is just getting to release her own book on Obama and how great he is.

I doubt she's going to be an objective moderator.

Posted by osu (anonymous) on October 1, 2008 at 2:53 p.m. (Suggest removal)

How do you know it's a book about how great Obama is? It won't be released until January 2009.

Latest polling data--Palin's incompetence and Obama's performance in debate gives Obama significant leads in battleground states:

Yep, sounds like they vetted Gwen Ifil about as thoroughly as they vetted Palin.

And Vil, the FACTS are that Gwen Ifil's book has been in the works for quite some time, and the title is "African Americans in Politics". It is in NO WAY a book about Obama.
One more distortion.

The moderator is just a safety net for McBush, even though the McBush campaign accepted her as moderator. If the debate goes forward, he'll say the moderator beat up Palin. Or, they may use the moderator as grounds for canceling the debate. I wonder what the safety net is for the last 2 presidential debates?

McBush = Incontinence/McBarbie = incompetence

Ifill Book Public Weeks Before McCain Agreed To Have Her Moderate VP Debate

John McCain must be demented if he chose Gwen Ifill to moderate the vice presidential debate WEEKS AFTER she had announced she was doing a book about race in America in the Obama age, but now, 24 hours before the debate, McCain is suddenly upset about Ifill's book.

He wasn't upset about it two months ago when he PICKED Ifill to be the moderator. But now he is. 24 hours before the debate, when it's too late to do much other than cancel the debate. Isn't that interesting.

It's one more example of John McCain's erratic behavior, behavior that is getting more and more confused and incomprehensible.

Here's the rest of the article:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/judd-legum...

Grandpa Simpson and the campaign knew about Ifill as the moderator AND they knew about the book, but still OK'd her. Now as reports from the staff come out that Palin is not doing well in a "mock debate" with the staff, the old man's campaign wants to gripe about the moderator.

pathetic.

osu ... you really do like to "make stuff up". The McCain campaign did not know about Gwen Ifil's book and they have publically stated so. Of course if you are getting your news from the Huffington Post you might believe that green men from Mars have taken human form and are living in Coal Grove ... or you might also buy into the theory that the world is really flat.

I wonder ... if we put fake breasts and lipstick on Joe Biden would he get the same treatment as Sarah Palin considering his plagerizing past and all his gaffes? Oh geesh ... any farmer knows that it is next to impossible to put lipstick on a pig not to mention fake breasts ...

... but the issue is not that the Republican VP pick is a woman cause we all know that Hillary Clinton (a woman) has put millions of cracks in that glass ceiling ...

... but heck ... (snaps fingers) ... I forgot ... Sarah Palin is a woman ... but NOT a liberal woman ... so she is automatically disqualified ... out of their league ....

... The REAL problem ... Sarah Palin is not only a woman but a C.O.N.S.E.R.V.A.T.I.V.E woman ...

... and thus the hypocrosy of all those that preach for women rights and women breaking the glass ceiling ... is shining just as bright as the darkness that overhangs the liberal hand out, marxist, tax the rich and give to the poor mesage of the Obama campain.

... aside from the Sarah Palin issue ... I have a question for you Obama supporters ...

Considering now that the economy is in the tank (and we all agree it is) ... do you REALLY think that Barack Obama can really give 95% of the middle class a tax cut and at the same time raise the taxes of those that provide the jobs in this country (the rich)? If you think that he can and if Obama continues to promise a tax cut when the economy is teetering on the brink of disaster (Obama's words) ...

It is nothing but a lie ... and I wouldn't believe it for a slick minute ...

while we are constantly reminded that not voting for Obama means we are racists and hateful ... lets read what the left hate mongers are saying about Sarah Palin ...

This from the Associated Press ...

-----------

BOSTON - A women's shelter on Wednesday cut headliner Sandra Bernhard from its annual benefit after she said Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin would be gang-raped if she ever visited New York.

Bernhard's made the remarks last month during her one-woman show in Washington before Palin visited New York to campaign. Bernhard said Palin would be "gang-raped by my big black brothers" during a diatribe in which she also criticized Palin for opposing abortion rights.

Neo did not get banned.

The REAL problem with Sarah Palin is that she is a moron. My pet clownfish are as qualified as she is--maybe more qualified because they came from Australia! They know more about foreign nations than she does!

John McCain's campaign KNEW about Ifill's book, and that is undeniable.

Conservatives are all alike--when faced with facts, they start to squirm.

just as much a moron as Joe Biden ... who thought that televisions were in American homes in 1929 and Franklin Roosevelt appear on TV to all Americans? What happened to President Hoover? Did the moron Joe try to rewrite history?

Geesh and Poor Joe is wanting to be a heartbeat away from the Presidency ...

-------

actually liberals seem to be all alike ... they like to deny facts ... and change history ....

Sorry, osu. republicans don't squirm. They:
a) they run and hide;
b) they think if they shout their lies or post them more often, they'll be believed;
c) they'll find a new way to distort the truth;
d) all of the above

Sheesh. All McBush's staff had to do was to google her!

And tonight, Palin's first gaffe will be when she thanks the university of Lincoln....I'm WHERE?...John, your people didn't tell me that....(stupid giggle)...oh, well, I knew it was one of those guys carved on Mt. Vesuvius.....uh, the presidents aren't on Mt. Vesuvius????....John, your people are starting to look bad here....what would I do about a case of Mad Cow disease in the U.S.?....That's simple. I'd replace the beef with moosemeat. Its really very tasty, like chicken (stupid giggle).

I bet Joe Biden could name at least one other Supreme Court case besides Roe v. Wade. And I know he can name at least ONE newspaper he reads. And I would even bet he knows what HAMAS is.

That's funny MasterChef--funny and sadly, truthful. I've been in "debates" with conservatives, and it's true--when faced with facts, they usually scream their lies, and shout over people. Look at Man Coulter!

TY, osu! Its really easy writing about McBarbie......so much material!

I wonder what you pathetic sould will do when your lord and savior is defeated in November. The suicide rate amongst you people will skyrocket.

Posted by MasterChef (anonymous) on October 2, 2008 at 2:43 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Vil, Now There You Go Again! Who are "You People"? Well, "WE PEOPLE" will have 4 years of an Obama presidency to work on mental health issues. The big question is how will Obama pay for mental rehab for all you Bushies and all the Pork McBarbie wants for Alaska.

Posted by osu (anonymous) on October 2, 2008 at 5:43 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Suicide is not a joking matter.

60% of people in NBC News poll says Palin is not quailfied.

Posted by AlisonMiller (anonymous) on October 3, 2008 at 9:41 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Suicide?!?

It's just politics. After eight years of Clinton, people were ready for a Republican. After eight years of Bush, people are ready for a Democrat. It isn't rocket science. Geez.

Posted by AlisonMiller (anonymous) on October 3, 2008 at 9:43 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Does anybody know if OUS will be letting the public know their results? I'm curious.
