Church to help students going back to school

Published Friday, August 7, 2009

PROCTORVILLE — There will be a school supply giveaway for Fairland district students Saturday at New Hope United Methodist Church.

It will be open to Fairland students from elementary to high school and runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Students are asked to bring a school supply list, if available.

Items to be given away include backpacks, notebooks, pens, pencils, pencil boxes, binders and folders.

“We are trying to supply everything they will need,” said Robin Ross, co-organizer of the giveaway with Dena Laton.

Last year was the first year for the church to offer the supplies to the students in its area. Then, approximately 100 students took advantage of it.

“I thought it was a really good idea to reach out to the community. There was probably a great need with people being out of work and incomes really cut,” Ross said. “This would be a way to reach out.”

If students don’t have a supply list, organizers have drawn up a master list checking teachers’ Web sites for items.

“We will try to provide what they need,” Ross said.
