Students participate in drama, dance workshops
Published Tuesday, January 13, 2009
ASHLAND, Ky. — Approximately 46 Youth Leadership students who are currently juniors in Boyd and Greenup County high schools participated in activities to learn more about the importance of culture in society, and the Tri-State specifically, in a workshop at the Paramount Arts Center.
All students will also participate in drama and dance workshops on the Paramount stage.
This session is being sponsored by the Ashland Alliance and the Paramount Arts Center, where activities began at 9 a.m. today under the direction of Melanie Sweeney, Director of Education and Outreach for the Paramount. Courtney May-Arthur will lead the dance session.
"This is always a fun session for the students in the Youth Leadership program," Sweeney said. "They like the fact that they are actively involved. And it is always interesting to see how even those kids who are tentative at first not only begin to interact, but they seem to have the most fun. These sessions are great for bringing out the talent and excitement for the arts in the students."
The Youth Leadership program, sponsored by the Ashland Alliance, increases interaction between the youth in our area in settings designed to promote learning about community issues, encourage mutual respect, dispel erroneous impressions, and result in a shared concern for a commitment to the advancement of Boyd and Greenup counties.
It is the goal to instill in these young people the responsibility for their own lives, and the lives of others and society, and to develop responsibilities for leadership in each area.
After a lunch break from 11 a.m. to noon, the students will then visit the Highlands Museum & Discovery Center, the Pendleton Arts Center and the Jesse Stuart Foundation.
