IHS color guard hosting first dance camp

Published Monday, July 6, 2009

The Ironton High School Color Guard will take to the court July 7 to 9 in its first-ever dance camp.

The camp takes place in the IHS Conley Center and costs $25 to participate. It will cover a variety of dance genres including jazz, hip hop, flagging and baton twirling.

The IHS guard will be teaching many of these dance routines. They have spent the last few weeks preparing routines to teach to the children and some said they are excited about the experience.

“We have a couple practices to warm ourselves up and get us back to the basics so we don’t teach them the wrong thing,” said Stephanie Diamond, co-captain and senior at IHS.

The money for the event is being used to help sponsor the guard’s trip to New York that will happen later in the school year. This, however, is not their only inspiration.

“Hopefully, it will inspire the girls to try out for majorettes or flags or cheerleading,” director Valerie Freeman said. “It’s not only an activity to raise money but an opportunity to give back to the community.”

Captain and senior Amber Bazell is looking forward to simply teaching a group of younger children new things.

“They kinda get a little hint of what they do when they’re older,” she said.

In response to the comment made by Ms. Freeman; "Hopefully, it will inspire the girls to try out for majorettes or flags or cheerleading,” director Valerie Freeman said. “It’s not only an activity to raise money but an opportunity to give back to the community", this Dance Camp should be FREE.

First of all omea123, I'm going to give you a little lesson. Now, Mrs. Angela Malone, Miss Valerie and Mrs. Patty Freeman have been doing their jobs very well in the past few years. I do not see you or whoever going out and trying to help other children or young adults in the community. Second of all, the Tribune was incorrect in what they stated. The money is to pay for new uniforms, equiptment and for the dance camp. Some of the Guard members also went out on their own time and got sponsors for this camp. Third of all, I am pretty sure that if somebody couldn't afford this camp and really wanted to go, all they would have to do is call Mrs. Angela Malone, Miss Valerie or Mrs. Patty Freeman and explain their situation and they would work with them. I would appreciate it if you would kindly think about what you are saying and be able to back yourself up before you put others down. I happen to know the IHS Guard and Staff extrememly well and I know for a fact that they are very kind, hardworking, understanding and intelligent people. So the next time you wish to speak out of terms, DON'T. Thank you.

Wow, sounds like I hit a nerve. It is America and I can say what I wish to say. My comment was directed to the quote from Miss Valerie Freeman, " It’s not only an activity to raise money but an opportunity to give back to the community.” If you are GIVING back to the community, YOU DONT CHARGE FOR IT. This "Give Back To The Community Camp" is just another way for the IHS band booster to make money; Miss Valerie Freeman said it herself in the interview with The Tribune. If the IHS band boosters want to charge for this camp, then do it. Do not advertise it as "Giving Back To The Community" camp.

As a former resident of Lawrence County and a former band boosters with one of the Lawrece County schools, I know what its like to raise money for music education in Lawrence County schools. I volunteered many hours selling fruit, cookie dough, pizzas and many Saturday’s at car washes, etc. to raise money for Music Education in the schools.

And Divalicious, what a name. {smiles}

Yes I believe you did hit a nerve...omea123!!! If you would not be so rude about it. It is not Miss Freeman's fault the paper made a mistake. Anyone with any common sense would know that nothing in this world is FREE!!!! And someone with what ever experience you say you have would know that!! It is not the first error that has been made and won't be the last. It is clear that you do not know who or what you are talking about, it would be best if you don't say anything at all. All of the women that is associated with the IHS Guard put up with the crap from people like you for those girls, and they would do anything for them. Next time I suggest you think and then just DON'T!!!
