RH superintendent search narrowed, applicants released

Published Saturday, June 13, 2009

ELIZABETH TOWNSHIP — The Rock Hill Board of Education will likely discuss its list of candidates for school superintendent when it meets Tuesday evening.

Board President Dennie Hankins said already the original 25 candidates have been whittled to 18.

A few applicants withdrew their names from consideration, citing various reasons, Hankins said.

“The most common reason given was that, when we told them we were providing the names to The Tribune, some of them were under contract with other districts and rather than having their names published decided to withdraw,” Hankins said.

Hankins said the next step in the selection process will be to decide which candidates to call for face-to-face interviews.

However, he said if the board members decide none of the candidates fit the district’s needs, they could extend the search a couple of weeks and seek more applicants.

Hankins said the hope is, though, to have a new superintendent by early- to mid-July.

“We’re hoping during the interview process someone just stands out,” Hankins said.

The 18 candidates are: Fred Boring, administrative assistant to the superintendent of Bellefontaine City Schools; Margaret Ann Charles, elementary school principal for the Peebles school district in Adams County; Stacey Lynn Griffit-Cooper, executive director for secondary schools for Mansfield schools; Thomas Dimit, educational attorney/ consultant for Algonquin Property Group LLC; Eric Floyd, educational administrator for the Ohio River Valley Juvenile Correctional Center in Franklin Furnace; Brenda Haas, executive director of the Ohio Appalachian Center for Higher Education (OACHE) in Portsmouth and former assistant principal at Dawson-Bryant High School; Wes Hairston, assistant principal at Rock Hill Middle School; Eric Holmes, Dawson-Bryant Elementary School Principal; Steve Lambert, Rock Hill High School principal; Rebecca Honaker, principal at Georgetown village schools near Cincinnati; Bruce Kidder, middle/high school principal for Holgate local schools in Henry County; Ronald Lindsey, superintendent for Green Local Schools in Scioto County; Dr. Dave Lucas, acting associate dean for Ohio University Southern; Ralph Madden, instructor/ assistant director for Scioto County Joint Vocational School; Dr. Candace McIntosh, elementary principal for Talawanda schools in Oxford; Dr. Art Stellar, superintendent for Taunton Public Schools in Taunton, Mass.; and two men listed as retired superintendents, Jerry P. Skiver, of Sciotoville, and Bob Smith, whom Hankins said comes highly recommended by an official with the Ohio School Boards Association.

Veteran Superintendent Lloyd Evans’ contract with the district expires July 31. The board has opted to not give him a new one.

I support Steve Lambert, Wes Hairston and Dr. Dave Lucas for school superintendent. All three are good men. I had the honor of being a student of Rock Hill High when Steve and Wes were Principal and Vice Principal. Dr. Dave was my professor at OUSC several times. All three are dedicated to education. That's what the district needs. Someone who wants what's best for the students. Not someone who wants money in their pockets and a label of social status, like Mr. Evans did.

Dave Lucas is not the type of person you want running a school district. His off the wall antics may have been entertaining in class, but the man plays too much politics. That is what Rock Hill doesn't need.

I don't think I have ever agreed with Vil, but I do on this one.

I agree with you Vil, Mr. Lucas would be a very POOR choice for the position.

I definitely think the Board needs to hire someone from outside the district as the new superintendent, NONE of the candidates from within the district, are up to the demands of the position. Heck they aren't up to doing the jobs they have as principals. After hiring the new superintendent they need to hire new principals for all of the schools as soon as the principals contracts are up.

Im sure the board will pick someone close as stupid as it may seem they will. . I think they should someone away from here but they wont. The board will have nothing to do now since Lloyd is gone I hope they have more problems than ever before.

Why would you wish that?

People don't understand how all this infighting effects the kids. They have to go home every night and hear about it from their parents and it gets drubbed into their heads.

Whether you like this board or you don't, you should still want them to do well because if they don't do well the kids don't do well.

Are you saying you want the children in the Rock Hill District to fail, dogone?

Rock Hill keeps hiring people from within, people who graduated from a failing school system. Is this a good idea? One the other hand, hiring outside the system will cause resistance to new ideas. It's like hamsters in a wheel, they keep doing the same things, with the same outcomes, only in new wheels.

(not all employees I must say, I have a good friend who is very dedicated teacher there, and is very frustrated at times with the way things work out there, but she keeps trying)

There is a very good guy out there for this job. he once worked at RH as an administrator. sadly it has appeared that he withdrew his name. he has done wonders for another wschool system in the area. Oh well, good luck to Rock Hill. hopefully their candidate can get them going in the right direction.

My children are students in the district and I am praying the board takes the time to truly consider who is best for the job. There are many qualified names on this list who would do a good job.

I THINK THEY SHOULD LEAVE POLITICS OUT OF THE SCHOOL AND START WITH A FRESH START AND GET SOMEONE FROM ANOTHER PART OF THE STATE.THEY HAVE TAKEN PRAYERS OUT OF THE SCHOOL NOW THEY SHOULD MAKE A GOOD DECISION AND KEEP POLITICS OUT TOO.THEY DEFINITLY DON'T NEED STEVE LAMBERT AS SUPERINTENDENT NOR HARISTON. THEY REALLY NEED TO LET SOMEONE ELSE DO THE CHOSING BESIDES THE SCHOOL BOARD HERE.GET RID OF SOME OF THE RIFRAFF RUNNING THIS SCHOOL AND PUT SOMEONE IN FROM SOMEWHERE ELSE.I HATE TO SPEAK BADLY ON SOME OF THE PEOPLE THERE BUT MY SON WASN'T TREATED FAIRLY BY SOME OF THE TEACHERS OR MR.LAMBERT THERE. I SURE WOULDN'T WANT HIM RUNNING THE WHOLE SCHOOL SYSTEM.I CAN SAY MR.EVANS WAS THE ONLY ONE THAT WOULD HELP ME AND LAMBERT GOT MAD BECAUSE I WENT OVER HIS HEAD. SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO DO THAT KIND OF THING OVER THERE AND THAT IS A SHAME THAT PARENTS SEND THEIR CHILDREN THERE TO GET AN EDUCATION AND THE PRINCIPLE FIGHTS TO KEEP THEM OUT. THAT IS WHAT LAMBERT DID TO MY CHILD HE HAS HIS PICKS THATS FOR SURE.BUT IF YOUR NOT INTO POLITICS THERE YOU JUST DON'T FIT IN.SOMEDAY THEY MIGHT GET POLITICS OUT OF OUR SYSTEM AND THEN THINGS MIGHT CHANGE.

Dr. Dave Lucas has been a fixture in education for almost 20 years and just because he may have ran for office around 10 plus years ago, does not make him a bad choice. Also not picking someone from this area is narrow minded because almost all other Superintendents at other district are from this area but they have not had the problems Rock Hill has. EVANS WAS THE PROBLEM not people from this area.
