Burcham to run for auditor
County treasurer joins commissioner in race for post
Published Tuesday, June 23, 2009
And now there are two.
Lawrence County Treasurer Stephen Dale Burcham has picked up a petition to run for county auditor next year. He seeks the office next door to his — literally — that is being vacated on the retirement of veteran officeholder Ray T. Dutey.
Burcham, who began his second term as treasurer, said he decided to run because his professional background is a good fit for the auditor’s office.
“The particulars of that job are closely aligned with a lot of the things I do. I am a certified public accountant and that office is responsible for things like paying the county’s bills. I think I have made changes in the treasurer’s office that have been good for the Lawrence County taxpayer and I would like to carry some of those positives to the auditor’s office,” Burcham said.
Burcham, a Democrat, is the second person to file for the 2010 auditor’s race. Thus far, he will face Republican Lawrence County Commissioner Jason Stephens for that post. Stephens picked up his petition earlier this month. They are the only two people who have announced plans to run for any county office next year.
In the meantime, the field of candidates seeking elective office this year is growing. These are the newest names added to the roster of people either picking up or filing a petition since June 3.
In the Proctorville Village Council race, incumbent councilwoman Brenda Chapman has added her name to the list of four unknown candidates who have picked up petitions.
In the Aid Township trustees race, Wayne Taylor has picked up a petition but has not yet filed it. He is the third person to express an interest in the two seats available.
In the Elizabeth Township trustees race, add Brian Kidd’s name to the list of people expressing an interest in the two seats available. Kidd has picked up a petition, the fifth person to express an interest in those two seats.
In Mason Township, three more have picked up petitions to run for two available trustee seats since June 3. They are Jamie Klaiber, Shannon Pancake and John Kelley.
In Washington Township, incumbent trustee Peggy Horner has picked up a petition to seek another term in office. Thus far there are two people seeking the two seats available there.
In Windsor Township, incumbent trustees Donald Adkins and Donald Rigney have both picked up petitions seeking re-election to the two seats available this year.
In the Rock Hill school board race, incumbent veteran board member Wanda Jenkins has picked up a petition to run for two available seats, as has Paul David Knipp.
In the South Point school board race, Rita Vance is thus far the only person to pick up a petition. There are two seats available on that board.
In the Symmes Valley Board of Education race, John Kelley has picked up a petition seeking one of three available seats.
The deadline for filing a petition to run in the November 2009 election is Aug. 20. That petition must be obtained and returned to the Lawrence County Board of Elections at the Lawrence County Courthouse.
