Rock Hill heads to home stretch in interview process

Published Friday, June 26, 2009

ELIZABETH TOWNSHIP — Rock Hill school board members will interview the last of seven hopefuls for the district’s next superintendent when they meet in special session this afternoon at the high school — but there has been one change in the lineup.

Board President Dennie Hankins said Fred Boring, administrative assistant to the superintendent of Bellefontaine City Schools, has told board members he will be unable to meet with them for an interview and is therefore no longer being considered as a candidate.

But Hankins said Green Local Schools Superintendent Ron Lindsey, who had earlier been unavailable for interview, has had a change in his schedule. He has been added to the list of seven candidates for the district’s top administrative job.

“The process is going well,” Hankins said Thursday. We had four interviews last Friday and then three more tomorrow. We’re on target. I’m pleased with the way it’s going.”

The other candidates for the position are Eric Floyd, educational administrator for the Ohio River Valley Juvenile Correctional Center in Franklin Furnace; Brenda Haas, executive director of the Ohio Appalachian Center for Higher Education (OACHE) in Portsmouth and former assistant principal at Dawson-Bryant High School, Wes Hairston, principal at Rock Hill Middle School, Steve Lambert principal at Rock Hill High School, Dave Lucas, acting associate dean at Ohio University Southern and Bob Smith, retired superintendent of Zane Trace Schools in Ross County.

The board has a special meeting planned for 6:30 p.m. Monday. The purpose of the meeting is to close out the financial matters for the school year that just ended as well as to “discuss employment of personnel.”

Hankins would not say if the board would select a new superintendent at that meeting or if that decision would be made and announced later on. There are three key positions open within the district right now, that of superintendent, Title 1 (federal programs) coordinator and band director. Superintendent Lloyd Evans’ contract with the board expires July 31 and the board has chosen not to give him a new one.

Teresa Robinson, who had been Title 1 coordinator, has announced her retirement and it was approved by the board at its regular meeting earlier this month. The band director’s position became vacant when former director Scott Jones pleaded guilty to sexual misconduct involving two female students earlier this year.
