Community Fair at BCPL is April 11

ASHLAND, Ky. — Connecting community groups with local people looking to become involved is the goal of the upcoming Community Fair at Boyd County Public Library.

The library is registering groups to participate in the third annual event, on Saturday, April 11, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Main Branch. The library will provide tables and chairs. Groups must bring their information and have a representative present during the entire fair. Small giveaway items are also encouraged.

The Community Fair kicks off National Library Week 2009, which has the theme “Worlds Connect @ Your Library.”

“The Community Fair is a chance for the public to see what their community has to offer,” explained Director Debbie Cosper. “Sometimes it’s hard to find that particular group or program you are interested in, and it’s hard for groups to find new members or volunteers. So, we are bringing both sides together for an educational and fun afternoon.”

Boyd County Public Library Friends will hold a bake sale. Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital will provide free health screenings for adults, and King’s Daughters Medical Center will have a Kids Corner.

Those who attend the fair can also get a special preview of the items in the Library’s April 18 art auction.

To sign up for the fair, call Amanda Clark at (606) 329-0518, ext. 1140, or email her at aclark@thebookplace.org. Information on all library programs and services can be found at the online branch, www.thebookplace.org

Area student scores high in scholarship competition

WILLOW WOOD — Judges met March 20 to determine the winners and alternates for the annual Buckeye Rural Electric Co-op (BREC) Scholarship Contest.

Any boy or girl high school graduate of the 2009 class whose home receives electric service from BREC may participate.

BREC currently serves over 19,000 members in parts of nine southeastern Ohio counties.

Dustin Wilson, a senior at Symmes Valley High School, will compete in Columbus on April 28 for one of four first-place prizes of $1,550 in the 2009 Touchstone Energy “Special Achievement Scholarship” contest.

He is the son of Danny and Vickie Wilson of Scottown.

Teen’s suspension holds in speech case

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) — A federal judge has upheld the suspension of a Huntington High School freshman who wrote “Free A-Train” on his hands to support a suspect accused of shooting a police officer.

U.S. District Judge Robert C. Chambers said Tuesday that 15-year-old Anthony Joseph Brown's suspension was appropriate given the amount of gang activity at the school.

Anthony was suspended March 17 for 10 days after showing support for former student Anthony "A-Train" Jennings.

Jennings is charged in the March 4 shooting of a Huntington police officer following an armed robbery.

Anthony's father sought a temporary restraining order, claiming his son's right to free speech had been violated.

School administrators said Anthony's actions were disruptive.
