The possible future location of ChildLab, a new medical clinic designed for the needs of the youth, is located along Third and Washington Streets.
Children’s hospital confirms July opening
Published Thursday, May 28, 2009
IRONTON — Nationwide Children’s Hospital’s expansion into Ironton could happen as early as mid-July, hospital officials said Wednesday.
Charles Dudley, administrative director for the Columbus-based hospital’s ChildLab network, confirmed an opening date for their upcoming Ironton facility would be in a “mid-to-late July time frame” and that a specific date “depends on a couple of factors.”
Dudley said a lease for the property was recently signed and that contractor bids for the interior have been sent out. When asked, Dudley did not know the exact address of the new location.
However, reports have circulated that the hospital was considering a vacant medical unit downtown at 407 S. Third St., behind the Social Security Administration Building. A sign in the window shows the property that borders Washington st. to be under the umbrella of Jeffrey Stephenson and the Point Land Investment Group of South Point.
News of the hospital’s expansion into Ironton gained momentum on May 11 when two help-wanted ads for a laboratory technician and a part-time phlebotomist surfaced on various Web site job boards.
At the time, the hospital would only say the postings were placed to see if there would be interest in the community.
On Wednesday, Dudley said that a job offer on one of the advertised positions “has been accepted” while an offer on another “is pending.”
He added that while offers have been made, employees of the center will still need to go through ChildLab training.
ChildLab is a pediatric reference laboratory that allows lab tests to be conducted for patients not only in the Children’s Hospital system, but a variety of health care centers and hospitals. Children’s currently operates 13 ChildLab centers statewide.
Dudley said entering the crowded and competitive Tri-State medical market makes sense for ChildLab and Children’s based the needs of Lawrence County residents.
“We have a pediatric niche and we are very good at what we do.”
With more than 950 medical staff members and 6,000 employees, Nationwide Children’s Hospital has been ranked as one the best hospitals in the United States by both U.S. News & World Report and Child Magazine under the categories of both “Best Hospital” and “Emergency Services.
The hospital is also the pediatric teaching hospital for The Ohio State University School of Medicine.

So, is all we get at first a lab? This is just someplace to take our kids for lab tests instead of walking miles through hospital hallways trying to find the darn lab?

This is good news. I hope many more businesses open and survive in Ironton & Lawrence County.
I would love to see a Target store at the Hill's plaza or somewhere near Ironton.

If nothing else, it's a foot in the door. If they do well, they will bring more services. I would imagine that the other facilities in the area aren't real happy about the competition. Be kinda nice to keep Ohio dollars in Ohio.

What happened to the whole rehab clinic as first published? Someone jump the gun on the story? Yea a children's lab in town would be ok, for those who aren't capable of finding one down long hallways (*shaking head*). I have to say I've never walked for miles in any of the hospitals I've had to go to just to find a lab.
If you think one lab with two employees is a sign Ironton is on the upswing, good luck with that one. I thought they said there was going to be a rehab clinic?
And it's too late to keep politics out of it, look who they are leasing from. Give Ironton time, they'll find some way to screw this up so they pull out. Would be nice to see an entire childrens clinic in Ironton though.

Well... won't do me any good. They're not in my insurance network. So, I don't care where the money goes, Ohio, KY, or WV, it's MY money and I'm not paying full cost in OH when my insurance will pay 85% in KY or WV.

I would also like to see a hospital here for patients of all ages. Due to poor mismanagement people in Lawrence County, Ohio have had to suffer the loss of the hospital we had here. It is very inconvenient to have to go across the river, and maybe more lives would be saved if ambulances did not have to travel so far.

This probably isn't the right place to put this but why did they give the seoms the extra money when we observed two of the ambulances sitting at speedway in CoalGrove for at least an hour with the engines running with two people in each vehicle. What a waste of taxpayer dollars. If they had a levy going I would compaign against it for sure.
