Election time to have voice

Published Tuesday, November 3, 2009

By the end of the night, Lawrence County may have some new faces of leadership on its school boards, municipal councils and township trustee groups.

Or it may be many of the same people who were there before.

Either way, today, Nov. 3, 2009, is about two things: Making your voice heard and then finding the unity to bring sides together that were split only hours before.

Most of the men and women seeking one of the more than three dozen elected positions up for grabs are truly doing it for the right reasons. We have to believe that, otherwise it would be a very cynical and pessimistic view of the world and of Lawrence Countians.

Do some have personal agendas or seek some sort of personal gain? Probably, the simple law of averages would make you think so. But that is almost assuredly the exception rather than the rule.

So go vote today. Polls are open until 7:30 p.m. There is likely still time. Choosing those who represent us, from the smallest local race to the largest national election, is the foundation of democracy on which our nation is founded.

Secondly, if your candidate doesn’t win, find some common ground with those who did. Ultimately, the winning candidates will be the ones who voters have chosen in any given race.

If we allow them, elections can become divisive in our communities, often more of a problem with supporters of individual candidates than those actually seeking the offices.

Today should be about making a choice but also about rallying around whomever takes the seats.

I wish someone would put a muzzle on the lady in charge of Coal Grove Precinct B. Every time I vote the lady is so loud I can't hear myself think.
Get her out of there.

Also why is it the people who want the votes go to the precincts and take up all the parking spots. There is little space to park at the CG Townhouse. It makes me want to leave and come back later and then later may never come.

I hope our community is smart and doesn't elect a self admitted crooked cop like Beth Rist onto our city council. You say things are bad now and we are the butt of jokes, just imagine how much worse it will get with someone as admittedly crooked as she is around.

Tribune Editorial Board; Very good article. Thanks.

vil,
They need to clean house at the City Building. There are a lot of crooked cracks there. So crooked the building just might crumble, when that 2 million dollar law suit has to be paid to the family that lost their loved one at the river.

Hey Vil, Beth Rist is NOT a crooked cop!! Yes she did use poor judgement that day BUT she was only following her heart because she felt sorry for someone down and out. You must not know her personally because if you did you would know shes a very kind hearted person and just wants to do a good job, which she does alot better than most!! Get over it and lets get things on the right track.

I agree with luvinlife. And now that the results are in, Ironton has FINALLY made a good decision. Coal Grove, though, not so much.

The 804 absentee ballots were the whole Dawson-Bryant School District which takes in alot of territory. Voting in the peace & quiet of your home is much better than being attacked by people wanting you to vote for them or their relative. No contest!

Then do early voting at the courthouse where you show up in person and vote privately. NOT BY ABSENTEE! There is no control on who is actually completing the ballot on an absentee ballot.

Nothing is perfect for sure but many elderly people who want to cast their vote but can't get to the polls are thankful for the ABSENTEE BALLOT. Maybe that will be you some day. Take the blinders off. Their are a lot of honest people that see to it that those not wanting to be aggravated by going to the polls get to vote!
