South Point soccer league to help cancer research

Published Tuesday, November 3, 2009

SOUTH POINT — It’s a tournament with a mission. This weekend will be the South Point Youth Soccer League’s second annual ‘Kickin for a Cure.’

The proceeds will go to breast cancer awareness and research. It all started from the suggestion of a mother of a player who was a breast cancer survivor.

“She came up with the idea of a fund-raiser for breast cancer research,” said Chris Smith, volunteer with the league. “There were so many players who were related to somebody who was a cancer survivor. It was a good way to teach the kids how to give back to the community.”

The event kicks off with Family Fun Night on Friday at the old South Point High School gym from 5:30 to 10 p.m. There will be live bands, inflatables, a climbing wall and dunking booth.

“Anyone involved with the tournament and in the community is invited,” Smith said.

T-shirts will be sold with 100 percent of the profits going to breast cancer research. A raffle will also be held for an iPod Touch and a Nintendo DSi. Tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5. League members are selling the tickets. The prizes will be given away Sunday at 2 p.m.

Then on Saturday and Sunday begins the actual tournament at the South Point Little League Field on County Road 1. Teams will be grouped from under 8; under 10; under 12 and under 15 years of age.

Right now there are 25 teams entered with the first match starting on Saturday at 9 a.m. Sunday’s games start at 12:30 p.m.

Anyone interested in entering a team can contact Smith at (740) 646-3842.

I think this is a wonderful thing that the children and volunteers are doing...I lost both parents to cancer and a dear friend Jan. 1 this year. I also have a very dear friend that is more like family that was diagnosed with breast cancer, this is a wonderful woman that is a christian, daughter, sister, mother and wife. Any type of cancer is a terrible thing and I pray they find a cure for all cancer. Please pray for this family and all others that are going through these trials and tribulations. My hat is off to Chris Smith, this is a family man that has morals and values. He is a wonderful State highway patrolman, too bad there aren't more like him out there. I'm sure your parents are very proud of you...I know I would be thrilled to be able to say "that's my son". God Bless
