Payne, Zornes capture Ironton school board seats

Published Wednesday, November 4, 2009

IRONTON — Voters in Ironton overwhelmingly elected A. Burton Payne and Jay Zornes to a pair of open seats on the Ironton Board of Education, according to unofficial results from the Lawrence County Board of Elections.

With their election Tuesday, Payne and Zornes are set to replace the seats on the five-member governing body that were vacated by Jerry Rowe and Bob Vaughn who both decided not to seek re-election.

Payne and Zornes were challenged in the election by retired educators Jerry Brownstead and Daniel Hartwig. Each seat carries a four-year term.

According to unofficial results, Payne garnered 1,613 votes with Zornes grabbing 1,375 votes. Hartwig had 815 votes while Brownstead’s total equaled 578 votes.

Payne, a fixture in Lawrence County Republican politics for more than 40 years including stints as county commissioner and coroner said he is excited to be part of the district’s new schools.

“I will try to do the best job I can,” Payne said. “I have no special projects at this time, but I wanted to be a part of the new schools.”

Zornes, who co-owns Ironton-based Creative Financial Solutions and is involved in many civic and educational volunteer efforts, said his election was humbling.

“I’m happy to win. It’s kind of humbling that the citizens of Ironton would put their trust in me,” Zornes said. “We worked hard and it’s very rewarding.”

With their election, Payne and Zornes will now join current board members Tim Johnson, Robert Pleasant, Jr. and John Wolfe whose seats were not up for re-election in 2009.

Boy... Talk about a lot of 'Deadwood'... in Ironton
politics... and this I hope is not another continuation
of just that.

Ironton needed 'NEW BLOOD'... to keep the schools on track.
Well Lets Give Them a chance...

Because the past nearly 2 decades of Ironton Schools
Leaderships FAILURES and on the verge of Criminal...
let good facilities to be run down instead of keeping them
up....

And it cost the taxpayers of Ironton Boo-Koo Millions of
Dollars (that our Grandchildren will be paying for years)
They should have held the old team's feet to the fire for
their failure and ignorance.

Lets hope the board starts 'SAVING MONEY'
and begins investing it in our children's minds...
instead of lining certain cronies
pockets with it.

Let's see if our new board member (zornes) can attend sports functions and act like a professional representative of the Board. Have not witnessed this in the past.

Congratulations to Jay Zornes! Nice to see people who truly care about the community have the opportunity to work hands on.

Didn't realize there were specific ways to watch and attend a football game (comment from Demi), but sounds like you need some work in this area :)

I'm assuming this means no more leading the T-I-G-E-R-S cheers. Demi wants you to act like a stiff in public now. There are witnesses everywhere.

I think what they want is someone who doesn't pay attention to the game on the field. Don't cheer and support the team, instead hob nob the entire time with everyone and politic.

I echo Thomas5's comments. You won't find anyone that loves the city of Ironton, and it's schools more than Jay Zornes. If more people would get involved , and try to make a positive difference on the community like Jay has instead of sitting back and doing nothing but complaining about trivial stuff like Demi has, then Ironton would be much better off. Congratulations Jay. I know you will do a great job.

Now Now Thomas5....you are indeed incorrect. I have witnessed this person yelling rude comments at football players who are kids. There is a decorum that one must uphold not only as a board member, but simply a decent human being. Sorry to ruffle your feathers...you must be one of the cronies.

SouthPoint...."trivial?" Interesting from someone who calls themselves "Big Man."

Demi, yes trivial. What is wrong with the way Mr. Zornes acts at a ballgame. Are we not alowed to yell, and show support for our teams? Are we not allowed to voice our displeasure at an official's call? What does calling myself BigMan have to do with it? I'll be glad it give my true identity if you are willing to do the same. I'll be anxiously awaiting Demi.

Are you in the third grade? Meet you on the playground after school Big Man...give me a break.

No Demi, I'm 43 years old. Who said anything about a playground? Now who is the one hiding behind a screen name bad mouthing somebody with false accusations. I have known Jay Zornes for a long time, and I'm not going to sit back, and let somebody attack his character. If you're going to attack someones character, don't do it hiding behind a computer.

You know what they say about opinions? This is a BLOG...sorry to "bad mouth" one of your cronies....BIGMAN! hee hee hee People do this all the time...it is a blog.

Yeah...like I would give my real name to someone who egotistically calls himself BIGMAN....that's really safe. Being anonymous is for safety reasons...have you noticed how crazy our world is?

People should not bad mouth the kids who play sports. I am a teacher and it upsets me and yes, I have witnessed this...BIGMAN!

You're right Demi, people get on websites and cowardly badmouth other people all the time. I call myself BigMan because I'm fat, has nothing to do with being egotistical. You call yourself a teacher? Shouldn't you be teaching students instead of posting on message boards? Perhaps the Ironton Board of Education should look into teachers who waste their times bad mouthing people instead of teaching students like they are paid to do.
