LLC formed to assist in Ninth Street area development

Partnership gets county OK

Published Friday, November 6, 2009

Four area economic development entities will form a partnership to market and hopefully sell land in the area of Ninth Street, U.S. 52 and State Route 93 in Ironton.

The Ironton Port Authority, The Lawrence County Port Authority, the Lawrence Economic Development Corporation and the Ironton-Lawrence County Community Action Organization got the blessing of the Lawrence County Commission Thursday to form a limited liability corporation.

CAO Assistant Director Ralph Kline said forming the partnership will hopefully make development easier because it will allow parties interested in all or part of the roughly six acres of land to deal with one entity.

Right now the land in question includes the former Dennis J. Boll Group and Shelter property and the Lawrence County garage property, both of which are owned by the county, and the old National Guard Armory which is owned by the I.P.A.

The group home was recently moved to the old Rock Hill Middle School/Mended Reeds site in Elizabeth Township and the county garage could be moved to the old state garage site on South Sixth Street.

“I think we’ve seen interest from developers wanting to locate in that area,” Kline said.

Commissioners supported the idea.

“I think we’re moving in the right direction. We have developments at both intersections,” Commissioner Doug Malone said, referring to this project and the construction of a medical facility at State Route 141.

Kline said demolition of structures at that site has already begun; one house has been torn down to make way for the St. Mary’s Medical Center.

Why is Doug the only commissioner commenting about this? And how many freaking entities does it take to get something done? I mean jeez, two port authorities, the CAO, and the (Star) Chamber of Commerce. Probably just made it easier seeing as how most of the people on the boards of these groups sit on the other. BTW, I have been having trouble getting in touch with Commissioner Boggs as of late, heard he is on a hunting trip out west, he may get a BLACK EYE OR TWO by not being at these meetings at such a crucial time. The more things change the more they stay the same.

So should we get mad when they don't do things to make progress and create opportunties, and get mad when they do???

hope this leads to great things

Does any of this sound familiar? Remember the EMS stations? Now they're going to sell the Children's Home and county garage property (for $300,000 of which $200,000 is to be borrowed by one of the port authorities). If this "surplus" property was sold properly it would be by sealed bid and might bring more money (but then it wouldn't be in the "right" hands).

Also, wasn't this the property acquired or optioned by a private company who was going to develop a hotel and retail complex there. What happened to that proposal?

It appears it is off the table and now the good old boys are going to bail the good old boys out - again.

The commissioners will get another $200,000 to pay off more debts (so they can roll up another $500,000 next year). It's going to cost $750,000 to acquire the other property needed - where's this coming from?

Barkbeetle is right: The more things change the more they stay the same!!!! Arrrrrggggggg!!!!!!!

What The commissioners gave a blessing? These are the same commissioners who are creating mass debt in Lawrence county and do not care about the aftermath! The only thing they approve is something that will let them put those dirty hands in another pocket!!

A lady named Susan Bachman worked with Hilton came in from Tennessee and Looked over Park Ave. and Ironton Hills. She made a report on the area for building a hotel. I don't know who she gave her report to or what the estimate was reported. Whoever contacted her was interested in building on Park ave. but she favored the Ironton Hills area. This was several years ago so I guess they could not agree on the situation.

People have got to stop thinking "quick money" and start looking at long term investments. I don't care if the property sales for a dollar, so long as it is used to produce good paying jobs for our citizens, and boosts our tax base, improving conditions of our infrastructure, etc. If you are swimming upstream, turn around....its easier that way....

Jon...I tried swimming downstream once; it required me to do so with my head in the sand. I just couldn't do it... ....And I agree with you on sale of the property for a dollar if that would get it developed. But we shouldn't spend $750,000 in tax dollars to bail someone out of speculative property purchases. If this group can't develop the property and complete the project they should sell it to another PRIVATE party. The government's role in this development would be property tax breaks (typical move) and bringing appropriate infastructure to the site if it's not already there.

Hey Barkbeetle, Doug may be the only one talking now, but when a camera shows to break ground, Les will throw a old man out of a wheelchair to get in the shot. smiling all the way.
