Recounts coming in five races

Published Friday, November 20, 2009

With 168 provisional ballots counted, Ironton City Council is one of five countywide races whose results have generated an automatic recount.

That was determined Thursday evening as the Lawrence County Board of Elections certified the results of the Nov. 3 races.

The other races are Rome Township Trustee, Upper Township Trustee, Hamilton Township Trustee and South Point school board.

The top Ironton council vote getters picked up only a handful more votes with the margins remaining as close as they were on election night.

First time office-seeker, Dave Frazer picked up three more votes over Leo Johnson, whom he still appears to have knocked off the council. The latest count gives Frazer 1,246 and Johnson 1,233.

Former Ironton police officer Beth Rist stays in third place with 1,260, picking up 19 additional votes. New figures have Mike Lutz at 1,541 and Bob Cleary at 1,366.

Frazer was among the few candidates who showed up at the election board’s office for the provisional count.

“I’ll just wait and see,” he said about the recount. “I think it will go good.”

Another closely watched race has been newcomer Michael McDaniels’ challenge of veteran officeholder Don Klaiber for Upper Township Trustee.

On election night Klaiber took the second of two openings on the board beating out McDaniels by two votes. Robert Ackerman remains the top vote-getter with 1,492.

However with the new votes added, Klaiber and McDaniels are now tied at 1,271.

McDaniels also came to Thursday’s count.

“It’s been a good race,” he said. “He’s been on for 24 years. I am on my first time. I am very pleased.”

The race for the second of two spots on South Point Board of Education retains its one-vote difference for Les York and Rose Christian.

Latest figures keep Rita Vance as the top vote getter with 1,071; Les York is in the second spot with 1,070 while Christian comes in third at 1,069.

Brian Pinkerman in the race for Rome Township Trustee picked up two votes from Thursday’s count, giving him 900 votes, six under longtime trustee Dean Cooper.

Cooper’s totals remain at 906, the same figure as on election night.

Top-vote getter Mark Bailey added five more to his total, now at 1,241.

Other races that could have triggered an automatic recount, but did not were Athalia Village Council, Aid Township and Elizabeth Township.

Winners in those races are Lester Brumfield Sr., Benjamin Keeney, Ervin Napier Jr. and Debra Evans for Athalia council; Brian Pancake and George Gabriel Patterson for Aid Township; and Ron Davis and Brian Kidd for Elizabeth Township.

The five recounts will begin at noon Monday, Nov. 30 at the board of election offices.

For those happy with rist.... BEND OVER and be prepared cuz she ain't gonna be using any lube when she puts it to ya.
You are in deep trouble. She is suing the city. She will do nothing but cause hate and discontent at every council meeting. Your city is heading down a very bad road.

Considering he way Rist has been discriminated against, denied unemployment and also denied the benefit of the arbitrator's ruling in her favor, how would you expect her to react to the Mayor?

Beth was never discriminated against for any reason. There are other female officers working for IPD but they have no complaints. Unlike Beth, the other females are not afraid to answer potentially dangerous calls and will be there when help is needed. I believe Beth may have found her new calling in politics. Sit back and watch, she may be very good for the city, just as long as she's not wearing a badge or carrying a gun.

Can you believe the Upper township trustee race? Over 2500 votes cast and race is still tied. Don't ever let anyone tell you, " your vote doesn't count"
Good luck to Mike McDaniels, time for some new ideas.

Why does people think Rist is going to be a good Council Member? I don't get it - She was not a good city employee, Sued the City for "Discrimination" for her life style, and although she won the Arbitrator's ruling, she was unable to carry a gun. People, have we lost all our principles?

On the mark, that is what I told my daughters re. the South Point school board race. I worked late and wasn't going to vote, then decided, at the last minute, to stop in and get it over with. I'm glad I did because Vance would have still won, but York would have been tied with Christian.
One vote, literally, made the difference in that race.

well, that means you cost my candidate the election.........would rather not see York get it.....but he is only one vote on the board......Hopefully there will be a 3-2 vote majority for academics and not athletics........But thats cool too........its just small town America and small town politics.....you just have to love it.......Pretty exciting though...........philo publius

The Election Board certainly has a chore ahead of them. There will
be re-counts and re-counts.

Well, anyone who has a family member who is an assistant superintendent does NOT get my vote for school board.
On top of that, she offended me when she said "I'm JUST a mom, JUST a grandmom".... As if that's nothing important.

I am so sick of people commenting negatively about Beth Rist. If they would leave her alone, then she would have no reason to sue anyone. You do not settle out of court unless you think you will lose if front of a jury.

Lets change the subject to someone in your family. How would you like that. She won arbitration, she won city council. Surely you can find something more interesting to talk about now. Such old news. I am sure she does not care what the few haters think. She knows the people in this town support her. Amazing that they do when she may sue the city. Either that shows alot about her character or it shows that 1300 people in this town are wiling to chance her decisions over the other candidates. Good luck to both her and Frazier. I heard about his background and he seems like a great guy.

Well said 4victims
Ironton needs a change and as Tim Herr said on the news, "The Mayor would not give Beth Rist a badge but Ironton gave her the vote." In other words the people in Ironton trusted her for Council.

And Les Yorks wife is a teacher.........He has a neice working there.........That should not have anything to do with it.....Now if you would like to return your vote from mr. york, cause we wouldn't you to vote for somebody that has family working for the scholl, now would we..........Philo Publius

Wonder why the other females don't have a problems at ipd. Lets see, maybe they treat the men differently than Rist did.

Posted by nottellin (anonymous) on November 23, 2009 at 8:01 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Philo... Working FOR the school is not the same as being a superintendent. You do understand what superintendents do, don't you? You don't REALLY believe that teachers have the same power.... Or are you really that stupid?
Tracorn... You are wrong. If that were true, why are they one of only 2 excellent rated schools in the entire state?

Bystander... because the other females at IPD DON'T BREAK THE LAW.
