Nine apply for SV superintendent post

Published Wednesday, November 25, 2009

AID TOWNSHIP—The Symmes Valley Board of Education — both current and soon-to-be members — will discuss the nine candidates for superintendent at a special meeting Dec. 7.

The deadline for submitting a resume to replace the retiring Tom Ben was Friday.

The nine people are: Linda Henderson, federal programs coordinator for East Liverpool schools; Eric Holmes, special education director for Dawson-Bryant schools; James Howard, principal at Lawrence County Joint Vocation School; Matthew McCorckle, principal at Wheelersburg High School; William Madden, assistant director of Scioto County Joint Vocational School; Annette Massie, elementary principal at Ironton Elementary; Sandra Mers, assistant superintendent for South Point schools; Ken Ratliff, administrative assistant for Fairland schools; and Jeff Saunders, principal at Symmes Valley High School.

Board President Wayne Taylor said he was pleased with the response the district has gotten from people interested in the job.

“Many of the people came from the county but we did get one from as far away as East Liverpool,” he said.

The selection process will include both sitting board members Taylor, John Kelley, Brian Pancake, Kim Turner and Mike Wall and the three people who were elected earlier this month and will join the board Jan. 1: Hope Rowe, Tom Shepherd and Chris Thompson.

Taylor, Kelley and Pancake opted not to seek re-election.

Ben, who has been superintendent since 1993, will retire effective Dec. 31.

some very interesting names on here..........seems some VERY local administrators, looking upward........are they not happy in their current positions?...........What are the qualifications for becoming a superintendent?.......Do you have to be a teacher for so many years and then a principal for so many years before you can move upward?.........Just curious.......................................philo publius

Not certain about the qualifications, but I don't believe Sandy Mers was ever principal. She taught Language Arts at South Point Middle School before becoming Assistant Principal there, then moved into her current central office position. I'm in no way suggesting she isn't qualified, just making the point that I don't think you have had to be a principal.

Wow... Great list of potential superintendents. I was surprised by Eric Holmes's name being listed. Mr "I bleed Hornet blood" wants to leave Coal Grove. I honestly believe that James Howard would be a great choice because not only is he an educator but is the former chief deputy for the Lawrence County Sheriff's Office... Good luck to all.

I agree, some very interesting candidates ...and some qualified ones as well. Isn't it funny how seemingly innocent words can be used to slam someone? It suppose wordsmithing is something perfected by English teachers. Once thing for certain, Symmes Valley has the potential to end up with a great superintendent from this list of candidates.
