DEERING — It was a “Very Hungry Caterpillar” who brought out the local celebrities as Dawson-Bryant Elementary students joined a nationwide reading campaign.
Thursday was “Jumpstart’s Read for the Record,” where guest readers come to elementary schools to read aloud the same book to classes as a way to encourage children to become lifelong readers.
Participants all read the Eric Carle classic, now marking the 40th anniversary of its publication.
Guest readers at the Deering school were Ironton Police Chief Jim Carey, WSAZ-TV anchorman Bill Murray, Dennis DeCamp, Dawson-Bryant school superintendent, Eric Holmes, district director of instructional programs, Dannie Newman, guidance counselor, Angie Dillow, Dawson-Bryant elementary principal, and Steve Dillow, technical specialist in southern Ohio for Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart joined American Eagle Outfitters, Pearson, Penguin Young Readers Group and Sodexo, as national campaign partners.
The aim of this campaign was to beat last year’s record of reaching 700,000 children by reaching participation of 1 million students.
“The goal is that together we can raise awareness of the importance of reading with children,” Angie Dillow said. “The research supports the importance of reading with them as early as possible for a life of sustained learning success.”
Chief Carey held court with the youngsters in the class of his wife, Angie Carey.
“Kids use reading every day,” he said. “I hope this will encourage them.”

Why is he not reading to children in Ironton. He does not work for coal grove. He may have a good heart but some of his actions recently put a dark shadow on his character.
That is my opinion, and it may not be yours.
I agree with your statement of public figures getting the beat down on here. But, in my 54 years in this area, I have never witnessed anyone take such a beating from the press on a daily basis as i have the Rist lady. Shame on you, the ones behind that situation. You know who you are and what you have done. I am sure this will be deleted but thats ok. There are many websites to post opinions.

Jim Carey was at Coal Grove because his wife is the teacher. Jim might have done rotten things growing up but guess what?? He is still doing rotten things and God knows it.

You know, people who think they know Jim should identify themselves. I'm sure they don't know him or as much as they think they do about him. He is a VERY good person. The so called rotten things he has been accused of is bogus and those who want to throw stones need to step up and identify!!!!! Unless you are afraid that what you say about him is actually you that you are talking about. And as for Ms. Rist give it a rest already. Take a good look in the mirror and maybe you will see who you are really talking about (Turbo). And you are correct when you say GOD knows and may GOD help you when judgment day comes!!!!!!
