Rock Hill to move emotionally disturbed unit
Auction next month will offer surplus items
Published Thursday, October 22, 2009
ELIZABETH TOWNSHIP — They’re finding new purposes for old spaces.
Rock Hill school officials are moving the district’s emotionally disturbed class from a double-wide mobile unit near the middle school to the former board office building that sets between the middle school and the Rock Hill Child Development Center.
The former board office was vacated when the district’s elementaries were combined into a new building and an old elementary school was renovated to house both the child development center and administrative offices. Superintendent Wes Hairston said once renovated, the new space will be 700 square feet larger than the existing classroom facilities, a key concern when trying to educate children with special needs.
“It’s cramped, it’s crowded, and if it were my child being educated there, I wouldn’t be very pleased,” Hairston said of the existing classroom facility.
He said renovation of the former board office can be accomplished at minimal cost to the district, another consideration, given a lackluster economy.
The district’s staff will soon have a wellness center. The district has gotten a $5,000 grant from Medical Mutual insurance to pay for necessary equipment.
The wellness center will be in a portion of the old weight room at the middle school.
The board Tuesday agreed to have an auction to sell surplus computers, desks and other furnishings that are being stored in the area that will house the wellness center and the old board office. The auction will be 10 a.m. Nov. 21.

I would think as many as emotionally disturbed people they have in the Rock Hill district, that the old high school on 93 might be big enough.
