Drug sting catches 24 suspects
Published Wednesday, October 28, 2009
It’s been a busy three months.
Lawrence County authorities have wrapped up a three-month investigation into alleged drug activity by securing indictments against 21 people. But in the process of arresting those people, police found four others also suspected of drug peddling. Of those 25 people, 24 have been apprehended; only one adult and an unnamed juvenile remain at large and authorities are encouraging anyone with information as to their whereabouts to call and provide it to law enforcement.
Authorities said some of those 25 are involved in the Florida prescription drug pipeline.
“That’s probably our number one problem right now,” Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office Detective Aaron Bollinger said.
“Back in 2001, 2002, up to 2006 and 07, crack was the biggest problem we had,” Lawrence County Drug and Major Crimes Task Force Detective David Marcum said. “That seemed like the drug of choice for addicts in our county. Since 07, it seems like everyone is after pain pills.”
During the investigation six residences were searched and more than 1,000 oxycodone and xanax pills were seized, along with crack cocaine and money.
Authorities now seek Raymond E. Brown, 51, of 713 Mill St., Ironton.
Tuesday night authorities arrested, Didrie C. Riffe-Stapleton, 36, of 111 ½ Lincoln St., Coal Grove; Brandon L. Justice, 23, of 707 Mastin Ave., Ironton; and David L. McKee, 26, of 704 S. Seventh St., Ironton. All three remain in the Lawrence County Jail awaiting arraignment.
Several of those arrested have already been arraigned in Lawrence County Common Pleas Court: Larry Blankenship, 30, of 46 Private Drive 9992, South Point; Robert Esque Jr., 21, of 52 Township Road 338, Ironton; Crystal Waulk, 28, of 1358 County Road 15, South Point; Frank Zeigler, 48, of 1216 S. Fifth St., Ironton; Gladys Lewis, 64, of 617 Vernon St., Ironton; Martin Stapleton, 51, of 617 Vernon St., Ironton; Linda Rosebrough 59, 2506 S. Fourth St., Ironton; and Kenneth Waulk, 32, of 2352 County Road 55, Ironton.
Others yet to be arraigned are: Michael L. Bailey, 23, of 2045 County Road 181, Ironton; Sarah K. Brace, 20, also of 2045 County Road 181, Ironton; Devon B. Murrell, 22, of 414 Vine St., Ironton; George Clutters, 53, of 2426 S. Fifth St., Ironton; Adam K. Ross, 23, of 2908 County Road 181, Ironton; Juandell D. Mitchell, 22, of 632 Koebel Ave., Columbus; Diane L. Waddell, 57, of 1625 Fourth St., Ironton; Madison K. Kelly, 21, of 55 Township Road 249W, Ironton; Paul D. Sisler, 48, of 2065 County Road 22, Ironton; Robert Watkins, 23, 4647 County Road 52, Ironton; Carlton Davis, 38, of 302 Washington St., Coal Grove; Brittany N. Lyons, 20, 105 Rowe St., Coal Grove; and Amanda L. Blake, 29, 809 Ninth St., Ironton.
Bollinger said other arrests may follow.
Anyone with information about the people still at large are encouraged to call either the sheriff’s office at 532-3525 or the Lawrence County Drug and Major Crimes Task Force hotline at 534-5830.
Calls to the hotline may be made anonymously.
People who live outside Lawrence County may call a law enforcement agency in their jurisdiction and give information.

I agree somewhat with the above, however these people are hurting others. They steal everything they can get their hands on. The "good ones" steal from their children and families, people they know who won't turn them in. I know first hand of pill poppers taking their children's Christmas presents to pawn shops the week after they are opened. I know first hand of lawn mowers, weedeaters, etc. pawned for pills and the druggies will even have the owners file police reports. If they haven't done a B & E , it's only a matter of time. Scare 'em straight with hard time the first time.

Neo, You're wrong. Some of these folks have long histories of drug use and dealing. And drug users, like drunk-drivers, don't just hurt themselves. They crash their cars into your wife & kids, your home, your parents; they burn down their home, your home, your church, the local pharmacy. They steal from your neighbors, your family, YOU. Illegal drug-use has far-reaching consequences and heartbreak. If they would just take their drugs & crawl into a hole, it might be different. But they don't. They walk, live, and drive among us bringing havoc in their wake.

Sorry, Neo, I typically agree with you but you can't blame the pharma execs and doctors for this problem. Those big "pharma execs", well they are the ones putting up billions of dollars in research and development so that people have ways of living with diabetes, HIV, cancer, etc. They have to pay PHD's major bucks to create cures or maintenance drugs for all types of illnesses. You need a certain drug one of these days to save your life and you will be BEGGING them for a cure. Oxycontin used as it was meant to be used is a wonderful pain killer that I'm sure many are thankful for. These drug addicts break or crush the pills making them far more potent. The pill's 24 hour time release is destroyed in that process. AND..these people pictured here aren't the addicts, they are the PUSHERS and the DEALERS! They are the reason our family and friends are addicted so badly they will stop at nothing to get that next fix. Put them up in the jail, who cares what it costs? It's worth it to me!

It's nice to see lawrence county drug task force taking down some pill heads. On the other hand this is never going to change until lawrence county gets some jobs around here. Then of course florida needs to shut down these clinics that you can just walk into and say my back hurts and they give you a bottle full of oxy.

I agree with the comment above. These are dealers, not just addicts. I recognize a couple of former students who look my age instead of my children's ages. Something has to break the cycle.
I have people I love who had to put in expensive alarm systems to keep these scum from breaking into their houses to steal pills or cash to buy pills. Not just to take but to make money.
As far as I'm concerned, these are 24 people who won't break into law abiding, peaceful citizens' homes, or pass out in restaurants while their children look on.
This is a big reason people are buying and carrying guns, not because of some philosophical difference with government leaders.

While you are at it take away their medical cards, food stamp cards, and all the other government benefits they receive and I am sure it will pay for their incarceration.

i think hard time is the answer. i also think any elected politician, teacher, coach, anyone that gets assistance like foodstamps, social security, any kind of help needs to be drug tested if they fail they shouldnt get the help put them away we are paying for them anyway. if they have kids thats not what the kds need to see then they think its ok and its not take the kids were paying for them also. we shouldnt have people in office doing drugs this causes more problems everywhere. teachers using shouldnt teach are kids. these people can be helped but not by a smack on the hand. hard love works better and faster.

There is no way to win the war on drugs period. Legalize the crap. give them free dope, try to consel them, let them kill themselves or whatever. If the drugs are free, no more worrying about losing your personal property, which is what happens to innocent folks who have nothing to do with a persons addictions.
*Keep the Law in Lawrence county*

My point is that in our lifetime that the law against drug abuse will only ever be decreased instead of legalized and that will just increase the problems. Just look at the problems that the pain clinics in florida have created for THIS small town.

The real victims here are patients with legitmate pain. There are plenty of people with real problems who suffer because they walked into the ER and the doctor is just not handing it out anymore. It isn't fair and it's unfortunate. It isn't the docs fault either, they are in a bad position. Do you make this "real" person suffer or do the give the junkie his fix. Its hard to tell who is who. Ultimately, many docs are starting to go with the ladder because they don't want the stuff on the streets. Thank You Lawrence County Law enforcment! As a citizen of this county, I can't tell you how appreciative I am that you are working hard and delivering results! Keep up the great work!

Worse yet, they procreate! A child learns what they live. It's called behaviorism, a product of their environment. Neglected and abused children commonly are bred and raised by parents who were neglected and abused children. Consequently, children raised by thieves and drug users grow up thinking that way of life if the way it's supposed to be. It's cyclical, and few children receive the encouragement and assistance needed to break the cycle.
Our law enforcement drug task force officers do an excellent job apprehending the criminals. But, these criminals are usually only in jail until they appear in court and are released by small dollar bond or own recognizance back in to the community on a supervised program that does nothing to curtail or stop their criminal activities. Ergo, the actual cost in tax dollars to house them is minimal compared to the destruction and damage they do on the street.
All elements of the county are seeing a drastic increase in crime, particularly breaking and entering, which is best reduced through gun control - use two hands. No jail time, no court appearance, no release.

Neo - re "Legalize, Control, Regulate" :
Legalize: aren't these pills legal?
Control: should the doctor have the ability to determine how much pain medication is needed?
Regulate? My insurance allows me to buy pain pills, at a much cheaper price than on the street. The insurance also determines how many pills a month I can have - regulation.
During prohibition, the sale of alcohol was illegal, hence the black market.
But the pills are legal, there are doctors to prescribe, pharmacies to issue, insurance to pay for the pills, why is there a black market? because there IS regulation and controls over how many pills can be disbursed to patients legally?
What more regulation and control is needed?
Do we just make these OTC and let everyone have at 'em?
So are you proposing that people can get an unlimited supply of pain pills? if so, isn't that abandoning regulation and control?

redhornet, are taking up for them, you make it sound like you are in favor of what they did, running drugs up here for other people and possibly kids to use them, so it's better to be the pill pusher and not the pill user.

Grover4life I was just commenting on what you typed. You made it sound like they were taking money from the kids to buy drugs. And my point was they would not have to do that because they made good money running them. And no I don't approve of what they have done. If you want to do drugs in your own home that is your business but when you bring it to the street it becomes everyones business. My child has scene drugs being sold at school and no one wants to do anything about it because it might be a star athlete. I hope they all get what they deserve but we all know that if you sing like a little bird then you usually fly free.

Redhornet...do you really think that being a "runner" is really any better than being a user? These people work around kids for months as coaches and coaches wives and these kids look up to these adults as role models. Almost any kid that plays sports or does any activities always looks up to the people who teach them. And you think that that is something that these kids should "look up" to??!! Really??!!
The Little League needs to boot these people out! And yes, I know that the husband isn't being charged with anything (yet) but you can't tell me that he didn't know what his family was doing. That is just as guilty. These people, all 24, need to be locked up somewhere for a long time. I'm tired of seeing all of these people screw up the lives of others around them whether it be their own kids or the neighbors kid that they sell the stuff to. I don't blame the pills...I blame the stupid people that are apparently so bored that they can't find anything better to do with their lives and too lazy to go out and make a true, honest living.

In the words of a drug dealer..."So long as there is a product that people are willing to pay such a high price for there will always be somone willing to take any risk to supply it to them"
Remove the opportunity to make a reasonable profit from providing a product or service and no one will be willing to offer it. Thats true of any type of business including the drug trade.

I can in all honesty say, while much has changed there is a degee of raceizm which shames me.However..it is a pleasent surprise to see law enforcement go after the dominate, but i bet they are all poor. There is no shortage of those in power so addicted yet sheltered from law by those sworn to enforce it

I say, lock them up and throw away the key! Does anyone know the city they go to in Florida? We need to send this article to the Sheriff in that county. I have no doubt that there is a drug dealer in every block in the city of Ironton. If you know someone is going to Florida report their license number to the State Highway Patrol so they can be stopped.

anyone who doesnt think that the pharmacies and doctors are at fault here, you are both blind and nieve! i wont go as far as saying it is all dr's and rx but they are definately at fault. There is an excelent documentary on "www.hulu.com" called the oxycontin express. It is really informative about the whole epidemic we are experiencing in the tri-state area. Florida pain clinics are over loading patients with pills, accepting ohio, ky, and w va drivers licenses when they are not susposed too! florida does not have a narcotic monitoring system so doctor shopping is a common practice there. If this issue could be addressed our epidemic we are struggling with could be some what controlled. Not to mention how unaffordable treatment programs are! that is my opinion

They'll serve a little time and when they get out they'll go to a all exspenced paid drug rehab facility, then go spend the night in the homeless shelter(paid) and get the next six months of rent free, along with the ammenities of having free electric, water, and gas for three months. now who pays for all this? well take a deep breath because if you go to a place of employment your it.

IF THE RULES WERE MADE A LITTLE TUFFER THAT IF YOU SELLTO A CHILD IF YOU BUY FOR A CHILD YOU WILL BE IMPRISIONED FOR 20 YEARS THEN **DEATH PENALTY** NOTHING LESS FOR EITHER DRUGS OR ALCOHOL ...THE SAME AS IF YOU SELL TO ANOTHER ADULT NOTHING LESS BUT 20 YEARS THEN **THE DEALTH PENALTY** EVERYONE HAS THEIR OWN OPINION..BUT I GUARANTEE YOU ONE THING THEY BOTH WILL STILL BE USED,,,KNOWING THE STIFF PENALTY WOULD TAKE THEIR FREEDOM!

chain gangs are good but what im really saying is get caught 1 time= 10yrs NO EXCEPTIONS etc etc etc for repeat offenders.
compare robbing a bank to this drug thing i mean its not everyday u hear about a bank being robbed and why is this ? cause u know your looking at 10-20 for that crime!!!

Interesting to note that none of the people here have mentioned the head shop we have in South Ironton that sells all kinds of drug items and has young kids going in and out all day.
These people are not poverty stricken. They chose an easy way to make a buck rather then work (or try to work). Some are pretty nortorious dealers with previous busts. Some are the children of druggies. No sympathy here!

Drugs like Oxycontin and comparible pain killers (yes even Marijuanna) should be confined to Hospital use only.
Maybe that would solve the problem.

I agree with the statement that this something that needs to be discussed. Everyone here knows someone that is affected by drugs one way or another. If not, then you must live in a cave somewhere.
Although I do think that the penalties need to be harsher on these people, what is going to happen to their kids? And no, I'm not saying that the parents should be let off easy because they have kids but honestly, what about these children??!! More and more parents are leaving their kids to fend for themselves while they get their fix...whether it be drug, cash or whatever. And then what happens is that these kids grow up and follow in the paths of their parents the majority of the time. Something needs to break this cycle!

Here is how I feel about the drug abuse problem.
Either it should be legalized or have zero tolerance.
I do not like the middle road and I am very adaptable.

Are you serious goybar1? Having a drink of beer is far different from running drugs! Atleast when you drink, if you are responsible, you only effect yourself. Running drugs effects men, women, mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, children alike. Who knows who the drugs are being sold to once you go get them. Ignorance! I say find an honest way to make a buck and be thankful for what the good Lord blesses you with. Being rich is not what life is all about. Being honest is much more important.

Hey everybody I think Neo has some very valid points. Nothing against the efforts of the local law enforcement agencies, but I really don't think the problem is being addressed in a manner that is really going to fix the overall problem. I'm not saying that we can turn our heads at what is going on, but the problem is a lot more complexed to be fixed by locking up a bunch of people. Something needs to be done within the drug company system. How many of you remember when Qualudes were simply taken off the market because of the amount of abuse that was going on with the drug. If Oxycontin is such a legitimate drug then why can't it be administered by trained professionals instead of being passed out like "candy" by supposed "pain clinics". The problems goes a lot deeper than what local law enforcement can fix.

Although I am unsure of the efficacy of these stings by the drug task force, they *are* doing something and they are doing it under the letter of the law, which at times is not much to work with. I think they are doing a great job, if at nothing else, showing the drug community that the rest of us are getting pretty sick of their antics and the drug free community can and will fight back.
So many of you have great ideas. Obviously it is time for a change. Talking about it only does so much. It would be great to see some action in the law making area, specifically, sentencing.
One can't be rehabilitated without being an active participant in the process, therefore being forced into it seldom works. Not only does one have to change their behavior, but also their whole life which could mean walking away from families, friends, everything one grew up with that is common or familiar and even nonproductive patterns of thinking. Most, it seems would prefer drug addiction. Its a bit more attractive and much easier to just keep things the way they are.
Put them in jail. Let the pharm companies and the doctors pay. They make plenty of money from peoples addiction. Who knows, they may actually try being accountable for their part in this mess. And yes, they have a part.

oh my GOD are we really back to all of this again?can't you people find something new to talk about?or someone?half of the people above didn't even do anything really all that bad, they are just mearlly used as pawns, snitches, to feel in a space in the drug task force's game!they have nothing on anyone so they use people like some of the above to feel in the big gaps for them. and in return it looks like they have made some big bust when that is not the truth.if you only knew what some of them have done,it's really not that bad even though it's what it seems.everyone just needs to keep their NOSES out of it and MIND YOU'R OWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey mindyourown00, everyone has opinions. Obviously comments are welcome, you left yours!!! Wrong is wrong, it is what it seems. Drugs were involved and that is the bottom line. If there weren't drugs or participation in the peddling of such these pics wouldn't be in the paper. It is a very sad affair, but stuff like this happens to good people. Just like taxes, I don't agree that everything needs to be in the paper. Posting their names was one thing, but the pics were a bit much. This too shall pass.

Mindyourown00....if you didn't want to read the comments then you didn't have to. You REALLY didn't have to leave one if you think it's so stupid. the most wanted every week is a good thing i hope they catch them its a start. i hear of things going on and cant belive what i hear and iknow how people can get hurt by others innocent people get hurt by these people when they need money or drugs i know of a man who worked everyday he could to take care of his family and coached kids for a long time and is now paralized over a drugie. they do hurt people. and the one who shot him was a snitch and was high when he shot him.

Hadit, you previously said "They chose an easy way to make a buck rather then work (or try to work)." I know one of these people and happen to know that he has a job and works hard to support his family.
He is also a very good father, so to the people that say that these people prey on their own children and are negative figures in their lives, you are wrong as well.
He is also not a drug runner, he was just with the wrong person at the wrong time.
I know I can only speak for one of these people but I believe you can't group all druggies together and say they're all bad people because it's not true. Most of them are people that you interact with everyday, even people you respect.
I agree with Neo that the drug laws need to be changed; legalize these things and regulate and sell them the same way you would cigarettes and alcohol. How hard would it be to sell packs of marijuana with packs of cigarettes? If you legalize these things, you can tax them and then use that money for other, bigger problems. Also, this would free up room in the jails for people that actually need to be there.
Posted by michaelOH (anonymous) on October 29, 2009 at 2:11 p.m. (Suggest removal)
I still disagree with the legalization of marijunna but like I said, I am very adaptable and I would not blow a cork if it happened. As a matter of fact I remember when you went to prison for one joint and I believe you were shipped overseas to Viet Nam to fight in that "conflict". I could be wrong about that part though.

U know my mom told me about the bust. it is disturbing. Drugs well perscription drugs ruien my ex husbands life. i do blame the system. Ironton has nothing to offer the people who are addicted to these drugs. They send these people off and give them very little time to get off the drug and they put them right back out there. Its an addiction that these people and their families are left to deal with the rest of thier lives. Somebody up there has to see the problem and address it now before its too late for the young ones who have to live there. as far as i am concerned there isnt much future for the children in ironton. i guess its why life is finer in South Caroliner! the laws are differ and things are brighter for children here. I do relate cuz i have lived it with an pill user and it is something me and my children will deal with as long as their father lives.

lock them up put them in rehab but make them pay for it not the tax payers we didnt tell them to start using or drinking they did it on their own i disagree with paying for rehab when they started it was there choice just like the people in this bust i didnt say they all were bad but they all knew it was wrong when they did it so they are criminals now if they were good parents they should have thought about this befor they did it no way can they say they did not know it was wrong so they shoud be arrested also not saying they cant say yes im guilty i did it do there time and give it another shot and prove they are good parents for the ones that it is one strike do it right no more strikes in the future everyone makes mistakes and if its just once do what you have to own up to it prove yourself the ones who are repeaters and always blame someone else or are just trying to fight the system i hope there are harder times behind bars.

Someone stated that they were all ugly. Yeah.... oxycontin makes you lose weight fast and lose muscle tone. That's why they all have droopy, hanging down faces. Only a couple look normal so apparently they sold more than they used. I want to know why the one I know is out of jail? But thank god he got arrested for this and he should be for welfare fraud too as I know for a fact he owns his "trailer" but gets a rent reciept and therefore gets over $300 a mo. in food stamps. He owns a carpet cleaning business and has bank accts in several family members names to cheat the IRS and DSS. His child lived in a pigsty. Has rat feces on the food items in the cupboard, holes in the floor and rooms full of garbage. However, I do hope that for the sakes of the people that are not too far gone they do get rehab and can return to society and live normal lives. That's all I have to say.

Praise The Lord thay are getting the dope heads finally. You can run but you can't hide Linda Rosebrough. Look at your children and brothers and sisters they are just like you. The old saying is you reap what you sow. The sad fact is that the grandchildren suffered and nieces and nephews from your drug abuse and using the welfare and social security system to rip them off and buy drugs with the tax dollars that hard working people pay on there taxes to do your drugs. I hope they lock you up and throw away the KEYS!!!And if they give you probation they will find out that you are still using because you have not learned your lesson. They aslo should take the house that you live in away from you because it is a drug house. That to pay the state for what you cost tax dollars to pay your public defender. By the way last time you were seen in town you were walking, amazing now wheelchair bound and using you illiness to get pitty and defray the court system. They take people in prison with no legs or arms and also wheelchair bound.
