Two-vehicle crash sends one to hospital

Published Tuesday, February 9, 2010

An accident on the corner of Fifth and Ashtabula streets sent one man to the hospital Monday morning.

The accident occurred around 9:45 a.m.

Fred Stamper, who witnessed the accident said the driver of a green Ford Escort station wagon was traveling on Fifth Street when it was struck by a white Kia Sportage, which was traveling North on Ashtabula.

“She didn’t even attempt to stop (at the stop sign),” Stamper, who was driving behind the green vehicle, said. “She just ploughed on through.”

“That’s when he broadsided her,” Stamper said of the driver of green vehicle.

Sgt. Tony Forrest of the Ironton Police Department said the driver of the Sportage failed to yield, causing the accident.

“It’s pretty much a failure to yield, since he had the right-of-way,” Forrest said.

There were no visible injuries, but the driver of the green station wagon was taken to a hospital as a precaution, Forrest said.

The names of both drivers were unvailable as of press time.

Big shock, another one runs a stop sign, happens all the time. Have hustled my butt and dragged my children as well as it is an epidemic problem that no one (officals) seems to see. My wife watched one run the red light with the police in view and not a thing was done about it. The roads in town have become plauged and hazardous. Terribly so but wow citations and arrests are down. Amazing! My cndolences to those injured. Maybe this will bring some light to a issue that sorely needs attention. FYI to all PEDESTRIANS ALWAYS have the right of way. Dare you to try to cross the road and count on them to yield!

She probably won't get a ticket for it. I'm sure if she is confident enough to drive that vehicle at high speed and run stop signs she knows she'll get away with it and insurance will cover it. Probably is maxed out on what her rates for car insurance are anyways.
