Coal Grove Village Council to fill Markins’ seat
Published Tuesday, January 5, 2010
The death of a councilman-elect means the Village of Coal Grove has an important task to do in the first month of the year.
Glen Markins passed away Dec. 28, 2009 following complications relating to a recent heart surgery. The council is required to appoint someone to the open spot within a month.
“He was a very good man and thought an awful lot of the Village of Coal Grove,” Clerk-treasurer Debbie Fields said. “Mr. Markins will be missed by his community.”
Markins, a former mayor of Coal Grove, was elected to council in November, along with Juelda Collins, Bob Self and Aaron Stewart.
Other candidates who were not elected include Frederick Philip Roush with 258 votes, Chris Brammer with 271 votes, and Kyle McKnight with 277 votes.
Council is not required to appoint the candidate with the next highest number of votes, Fields said.
Council member Aaron Stewart said he will take into account how many votes a person got if they ran in the election, but he also wants to be sure the person who takes Markins’ place will represent him well.
“Glen served with my grandfather on council,” Stewart said. “It breaks my heart because I really wanted to serve on there with him.”
If council cannot agree on a person to fill the vacancy within a month, Mayor Larry McDaniel can appoint someone.
The council is scheduled to meet Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Since the death of Mr. Markins (R.I.P. my friend) happened so soon after the elections, it is only right that the next top vote getter is appointed. Good luck council and let's work together for the betterment of our community. Do not turn this into another battle.

I disagree whole heartedly bleedingheart. Pick the person who will fill Glen Markins shoes the best by attending council meetings regularly and not having an agenda. You know, like the school board

It's only right to take the next top vote. It should be the peoples choice. Well, exclude the enormous amount of absentees and take the person with the highest votes. And..Mr. Markins will be missed.

if he shows up to every council meeting, doesn't have a family member employed by the village, isn't in the village employees back pocket, and doesn't perform illegal activities in the village then i'm all for him...

I hope the council will not make a dumb choice. I would hate to see Coal Grove go down hill.

gcmom, If Mr. Markins is on the council, he was NOT ELECTED, he was appointed. BIG DIFFERENCE!!! If this is the case, I feel badly that our council and mayor would make this appointment on their opinions and not the RIGHT WAY. Nothing against Mr. Markins (don't even know him) or pro anyone else. Just should have done the right thing and went with next vote getter.

bleedingheart, You say the RIGHT WAY is to give the seat to the the person with the next highest votes, I hate to tell you but i will anyway since you dont know anything about the way things work. The council has to appoint someone with in 30 days and if the council cant then the mayor does. that is how it works. by the way who did have the next highest votes? Once again CONGRADULATIONS Mr. Markins for being APPOINTED TO THE COAL GROVE COUNCIL.
