Auxiliary lock opens at Greenup Dam

Published Sunday, January 31, 2010

GREENUP, Ky. (AP) — Boats have begun moving through the auxiliary lock at Greenup Locks and Dam on the Ohio River, but the main lock could take six to eight weeks to repair.

According to a news release from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, on Saturday repair crews finished stabilizing a miter gate that was damaged on Wednesday, allowing the use of the auxiliary gate.

The auxiliary chamber takes about three hours, compared to 45 minutes for the main one.

Before the lock opened, 14 tows were waiting to lock through at Greenup. The Corps is working with towing industry representatives to prioritize the tows waiting to lock through.
