The Coal Grove Hornets opened their season by outscoring the St. Joe Flyers 14-10 Wednesday, but Jones isn’t getting overly excited.

"We hit the ball well all through our lineup and we scored a bunch of runs, but St. Joe is a good hitting team, too," said Jones. "I’m not going to get too, excited, we got a lot of games to play."

St. Joe is now 1-2 but the Flyers have scored 34 runs in the three games. "We gave up two big innings and that pretty much was the ball game," aid Flyers coach Kevin Sheridan.

The Flyers went up 3-0 in the second. Pat Malone walked, Chuck Yaniko singled, Bill Dressel walked, and Matt Frazer singled.

Coal Grove erupted for six runs in the third.

Howie McCormick reached on an error, Josh Collins singled in a run and Brandon Keeney high a 3-run homer. Jarred Keaton walked, Borders doubled, Tim McClean was safe on a fielder’s chin. John Fields walked, and Dean Mader doubled.

St. Joe came back to get two in the bottom of the third.

Bub Waginger walked, and Rusty Yaniko reached on an error. Stack was safe on an error and Charley Yaniko singled in two runs.

Each team got a run in the fourth.

Klaiber walked and came around to score on Keeney’s sacrifice fly for the Hornets.

The Flyers Rusty Yaniko singled in a run after Frazer was hit by a pitch and Bub Waginger walked.

The Hornets scored six times in the sixth.

David Webb, Keeney, and Keaton singled, Borders walked, McClean singled, and Fields hit a home run that saw the ball hit the top of the field field fence.

St. Joe scored three times in its half of the inning. Waginger singled, Rusty Yaniko doubled, Stack had an RBI double, and Charley Yaniko got a two-run double.

Each team added a run in the seventh.

Brandon Keeney was 3-4 with four runs batted in and Josh Fields 2-4 with three RBI to pace Coal Grove.

St. Joe was led by Charley Yaniko who was 4-4 with four RBI, Rusty Yaniko 3-4 and four RBI, Andy Stack 2-4, and Bub Waginger 1-2.
