WHEELERSBURG – The South Point 10-year-old All-Stars didn’t go down without a fight. South Point trailed 11-2 going into the last inning and sent 14 batters to the plate as they banged out seven hits.
But the eight-run rally came up just short as Youngstown Boardman nipped South Point 11-10 Wednesday and ended the all-star run.
"We walked a few and hit a couple of batters, but we had some untimely errors," said South Point manager D. L. McWhorter.
Boardman jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two innings and it was 7-2 after four. Boardman tacked on four insurance runs in the fifth and, as it turned out, they needed every run.
Chris Brown doubled to start the rally, Chris Hale single and Justin Lewis doubled them home. Trenton Moore reached on an error, and, an out later, Chase McWhorter unloaded a two-run double.
Anthony Ross reached on an error, Lance Miller was safe on an error, and Aaron Ross singled in two more runs and went to third on an error.
Brown walked, Hale was safe on an error, and Lewis singled home a run. But two strike outs with the bases loaded ended the threat and the game.
"I thought we were going to get them the last inning, but the kids showed a lot of heart coming back like they did," McWhorter said.
South Point outhit Boardman 9-6. Lewis was 2-3 and Hale 2-4 to lead the attack. McWhorter went 1-3 while Brown, Anthony Ross, Aaron Ross, and Wood each went 1-2. Andy Burgess was 1-4.
Despite the loss, South Point finished tied for fifth place in the state tournament among the 10 teams. A total of 155 teams began the tournament field in district play.
Tallmadge beat South Point 12-0 on a one-hitter Monday which threw the local stars into the loser’s bracket.
South Point opened the tournament with a 13-3 win over Bellvue.
