Ironton turned in a strong week that featured three matches and improved its record to 93-14 on the season. The sectional tournament is Tuesday at the Portsmouth Elks Country Club.

"We’ve been getting better all season. We’ll have to play well in the sectional. There are some pretty good teams this year," Ironton coach Bill Washburn said.

Last Thursday at Sleepy Hollow (W.Va.), Ironton stunned Huntington High and a tri-match that included Hurricane. Ironton shot a 154 while Huntington had a 165 and Hurricane 171.

Adam Rudmann shot a 37 to tie Hurricane’s Drew Whitten for medalist honors. Brad Washburn shot a 38, Andy Brown had a 39, and Zach Christian a 40 for the top four scores.

Bo McGinnis finished with a 42 and Jeff Parnell carded a 45.

Brad Tweel’s 39 led Huntington.

Tuesday’s match was at the Portsmouth Elks and Ironton posted a second straight 154 total with a resounding win over the Portsmouth Trojans who shot a 217 on their home course.

Brad Washburn shot an even par 36 to lead Ironton while Rudmann and Christian each had 39s. Brown and McGinnis were one shot back at 40 and T. J. Parnell had a 43.

Georgie Davis led Portsmouth with a 48.

Wednesday’s duel against the tough Spring Valley Timberwolves was held at Spring Valley Golf Course and Ironton had its best score of the week at 151 to win by eight strokes.

Brad Washburn was smoking again as he shot a 3-under 34 for medalist honors.

"Brad had a good round and he really didn’t putt that well. If he had, it would have been a 29. But I’ll take that kind of a round any day," coach Washburn said.

Brown shot a 38, McGinnis had a 39, and Christian a 40 to combine for Ironton’s team score. T. J. Parnell shot a 42 and Rudmann had an off day with a 43.

Kiel Blake and Jared Jones shot 38s to lead Spring Valley.
