Not even a steady diet of rain could dampen the St. Joe Flyers performance.

With rain falling throughout the game, St. Joe remained unbeaten with a 4-2 win over Grace Christian (W.Va.) Saturday at Clouston Field.

"The kids played very well under the conditions," Flyers coach John Schwab said. "It rained the whole game and at times is was a very heavy rain, so it was a good effort."

St. Joe, 11-0-2, took a 2-0 lead the first half.

Eric Waginger got the first goal unassisted at the 17:00 mark, then assisted Pat Malone who scored at the 20:34 mark.

Grace Christian got an unassist goal by Nick Joyce at the 43:00 mark to cut the lead in half, but Andy Stack’s goal off a Malone assist pushed the lead to 3-1.

Seth Johnson’s goal at the 72:40 mark got Grace Christian within 3-2. St. Joe answered six minutes later as Stack scored thanks to an assist by Charley Yaniko and the lead was secure.

Flyers goalie John "Bub" Waginger had 18 saves as Grace Christian took 25 shots. St. Joe had 36 shots with Ryan Spurlock getting 20 saves.

The Flyers plays a key game against Ohio Valley Christian at 5 p.m. Tuesday at the University of Rio Grande, then travel to East Carter, Ky., for a 4 p.m. game Thursday and close out the regular season at 3 p.m. Saturday as they host Greenup County, Ky., on Senior Appreciation Day.

The Division II sectional tournament drawing was held Sunday and St. Joe drew the number three seed.

Wheelersburg was top-seeded, South Webster was the No. 2 seed, and Eastern Brown got the fourth seed behind St. Joe.

The Flyers play Wednesday, Oct. 20, against the winner of the Portsmouth West-Peebles game to be played Monday, Oct. 18.
