Flyers win sectional title

Thursday, October 21, 1999

NEW BOSTON – The St. Joe Flyers were able to accomplish the same thing in the first game of their second season that they accomplished during the regular season: A win.

After going through the regular season unbeaten, the Flyers captured their first-ever sectional championship with a 4-1 win over the Portsmouth West Senators in the Southeast tournament Wednesday.

"We played well, especially the first half," Flyers coach John Schwab said. "West gave a good effort and played a good game. I was happy to play well and get a win. Now we just have to continue playing well at the next level."

The Flyers move on to the next level which is the district tournament. St. Joe plays at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 26, at New Boston against Wheelersburg. The Pirates (15-0-2) beat Portsmouth Clay 8-1 Wednesday to advance.

Portsmouth West finishes the season at 1-16-1.

Pat Malone had a hand in each of the first two St. Joe scores. Malone had a goal off an assist by Eric Waginger at the 26:10 mark.

Andy Stack scored the next goal thanks to an assist by Malone with 29:31 on the clock.

St. Joe went up 3-0 when Waginger scored on a header off a throw-in by Charley Yaniko.

Paul Shively’s goal with an assist by Gustavo Sa got West on the scoreboard minutes before the half.

St. Joe got the final goal when Andy Stack scored off an assist by brother Danny Stack with 76:28 on the clock.

The final score wasn’t indicative of the Flyers domination. St. Joe took 37 shots on goal to only 10 for the Senators. John "Bub" Waginger had nine saves for the Flyers.
