Pedro – Two of the top scorers in the Ohio Valley Conference collided Thursday. One focused on her points while the other was the focal point.
Michelle Matkins reached a career milestone with her 1,000th career points and the Rock Hill defense clamped down on South Point’s Noel Mains in the Redwomen 74-35 rout of the Lady Pointers in the Ohio Valley Conference opener for both teams.
Matkins needed 3 points to reach 1,000 and scored 4 the first quarter en route to 13 points for the game. She also had nine rebounds and six assists.
Bobbi Clark led the Redwomen with 19 points and grabbed four rebounds.
"Michelle had a good all-around game. Once she got her 1,000th point, the pressure went off and she relaxed and had a great all-around game," Rock Hill coach Tracy Mullens said. "Bobbi had a good game, but I thought all the girls played well. They’re playing together and we had great team defense."
The defense mainly focused on Mains as Amanda Mays and Mandy McDonie teamed up to limit South Point’s leading scorer to 7 points.
"We knew going into the game we had to shut her down and deny her the ball. Amanda Mays and Mandy McDonie were on her the whole game and did a really good job," said Mullens.
Clark had 11 points the first quarter as Rock Hill jumped out to a 19-4 lead.
Matkins had 6 six points the second quarter as the lead went to 35-17.
Jordan Edwards and Amanda Mays had 6 each the third as the Redwomen extended their lead to 59-29.
Rachel Hartwig scored 7 points the fourth quarter to lead the Rock Hill reserves who outscored South Point 15-6.
Rock Hill, 8-2 overall and 1-0 in the OVC, hosts Chesapeake Monday in a key OVC game.
