South Point – Whitney Morrison and Sheree Powell applied the body punches, and Noel Mains delivered the knockout.
Morrison and Powell spent more than three quarters putting South Point in a position to win, and Mains took over and made it a reality as the Lady Pointers upset the Chesapeake Panthers 51-47 Monday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
South Point was down 28-21 at the half but 40-24 at one point in the third quarter before cutting the deficit to 40-30 at the end of the period.
Morrison had a career-high 18 points and Powell had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. All that kept the Lady Pointers within seven points with five minutes to play.
Mains, the team’s leading scorer who was scoreless at this point, took over from and scored all 14 of her points to rally South Point past the Lady Panthers.
"Whitney kept us in the game and played great defense on Kati (Fuller). Whitney’s defense and Sheree Powell dominating inside were big keys," Pointers coach John McClung said. "It was a great win for a young team to battle back from 16 down. Hopefully, this will keep us going in the right direction."
Erin Sutphin led Chesapeake with a game-high 23 points. Kati Fuller finished with 11 points.
South Point, 4-6 and 1-2, plays at Portsmouth Wednesday and at Coal Grove Thursday.
Chesapeake, 7-5 and 1-2, visits Ironton at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

Rock Hill 65, Coal Grove 27
COAL GROVE – It might have been cold at first, but Amanda Mays and Mandy McDonie warmed things up.
After struggling the first half, Rock Hill used the scoring of Mays and McDonie the third quarter and cruised to a 65-27 Ohio Valley Conference win Monday over the Coal Grove Lady Hornets.
"We came out so cold I didn’t think we’d ever get in a rhythm," Rock Hill coach Tammy Mullens said. "Then Amanda Mays came out and hit some shots and we started running the ball more. Mays has been using her speed the last few ball games and getting some easy layups."
Mays scored 10 points and McDonie hit all three of her field goal attempts as the pair combined for 16 of Rock Hill’s 18 points in the quarter.
Mays finished with 17 points and two assists while McDonie had 16 points and four steals. Michelle Matkins had a solid all-around game with 11 points, six steals, and three assists. Lisa Hacker grabbed 10 rebounds and Jordan Edwards six.
"I thought Michelle Matkins passed the ball really well," said Mullens.
Desiree Butler had 10 points for Coal Grove.
Rock Hill, 11-2 and atop the OVC at 3-0, hosts Fairland Thursday in a pivotal league game. Coal Grove hosts South Point Thursday in an OVC game.
"We kicked it in gear the second half," said Mullens. "I told them you have to be ready on any given night. This conference is hard. Every team has the potential to win. Coal Grove has a better team than their record shows."
In the reserve game, Rock Hill (9-1) won 25-15 as Julie Mootz and Amber Gould had 6 points each.
