Fresh off an upset of Chesapeake on Monday, the South Point Lady Pointers nearly got their second straight upset win only to lose 57-53 to the Portsmouth Lady Trojans Wednesday.
South Point fell behind 32-17 at the half due mainly to 15 turnovers. But Noel Mains scored 16 points and Allison Perdue 11 more in the second half as the Lady Pointers got within 51-50 late in the game.
But Portsmouth managed to hang on for the victory.
"We just couldn’t hold on. We gave a great effort the second half. Everyone we played the second half was a freshman or sophomore, so the future looks good," said McClung.
"We should have made some foul shots that we have made before, but we play really hard. I don’t like to lose, but I was pleased with their effort."
Mains finished with a game-high 25 points and Perdue had 13 points, seven rebounds, six steals, and four assists. Mains had five assists and four steals.
"Perdue played one of her best games of the year. She’s learning she can play out there and is taking it to the basket," McClung said.
"Those two started clicking. It’s nice to see those two playing together. We didn’t play team defense the first half and at the end we ran out of game."
South Point played without Whitney Morrison who was out with an ankle injury.
Portsmouth, 9-2, was led by Jessica Wood with 24 points. Larika McGinnis scored 16 and Shawnta Parker 11.
South Point, 4-7, plays at Coal Grove Thursday.
