And, in about a week, Lawrence County residents and animal lovers who are looking for a new pal of the canine or feline persuasion will be able to see what their local shelters have to offer – day and night.
Thousands of animal welfare organizations in cities across the United States and around the world are making plans for Pet Adoptathon 2000, an around-the-clock adoption event.
During the Adoptathon, shelter volunteers and Humane Society members hope to place as many animals as possible into homes with families who will give as much love as they will surely receive, Mrs. Beasely said.
"If I could take them all home I would," Mrs. Beasely said. "These babies deserve homes with good families. They’ve been through a lot and they need a second chance at a happy life."
The event is designed to unite pet-loving adopters with homeless pets that are in need of quality homes.
Dogs of all breeds, including Labrador retrievers, Australian shepherds and many adorable cats are available for adoption during the event, which will be held at the shelter on North Second Street.
Sponsored by the Lawrence County Humane Society and PETsMART, the 36-hour event is scheduled for May 6-7.
In addition to the chance to see the animals available for adoption, visitors can also ask about volunteering at the shelter or becoming a Humane Society member.
For more information on how to become a pet owner, or to ask how to volunteer, contact the shelter at 533-9050 or call the Pet Adoptathon toll-free hotline at 1-877-BEMY PAL.
Proceeds from the animal adoptions are used to provide low-cost spaying and neutering for the dogs and cats that wait for families at the shelter.
