When a city is facing a crisis, spirit, volunteers and a little bit of old-fashioned good luck can make the difference as a community gets back on its feet.
And, during the last round of bad news in Ironton, neighbors, friends and families are what have kept this community moving forward – and a little help from the state.
But waiting for Ironton’s luck to turn around is not enough for a group of Lawrence County churchgoers. Building Ironton back will take more than just a change in fortune, they say. They are putting their faith in God.
The faithful have been gathering for several weeks at local churches to pray for about 30 minutes each day. The daily prayer sessions will culminate in a community-wide prayer vigil May 4 – National Day of Prayer.
The community members who have been gathering understand that God is not just going to make jobs appear. They know the city will have to work just as hard to get back on its feet. But they have already seen some opportunities appear – personally and for the city – that seem to indicate God is not only listening, but ready to offer His help as well.
And gathering together to pray might give the city even more than jobs – it might just boost a little community spirit.
Even if you have not been able to be part of the weekly meetings, come to the May 4 ceremony and offer your prayers and your heart. Ironton could have no better "luck" than the support – and energy – of the people who live here.
