SOUTH POINT – The Coal Grove Hornets didn’t let the South Point Pointers run around on their field.

Or rather, Fields.

Senior Josh Fields pitched a four-hitter as the Hornets won a key Ohio Valley Conference game by beat the South Point Pointers 5-1 Wednesday.

Fields had eight strikeouts and six walks in going the distance.

"He didn’t have real good control, but he was pretty good. He threw the ball well and shut them down. They’re a good hitting team," Hornets coach John Jones said.

Coal Grove is now 6-4 and 4-2 in the OVC. South Point is 7-5 and 4-3 in the league.

The Hornets had 10 hits with Tim McClean going 3-for-4 and Jarred Keaton 2-4. Patrick Panell was 2-3 for the Pointers.

"We’re swinging the bats now, and it’s giving us a little confidence," said Jones. "Tim McClean is playing great ball all around. He’s having a heck of a season."

Coal Grove started fast with two runs in the first.

With one out, McClean and Jarred Keaton singled, Dean Mader was hit by a pitch, Josh Keaton reached on an error as a run scored, and Scott Lewis hit a sacrifice fly.

South Point got its only run in the bottom of the inning.

With one out Brian Cremeans walked, Jared Waggoner singled, Dick Weaver walked, and Panel had a run-scoring single.

Coal Grove extended its lead to 4-1 in the third.

McClean and Jarred Keaton singled, Mader doubled home McClean, and Lewis hit his second sacrifice fly.

The Hornets final run came across in the sixth when Josh Keaton singled, moved up on a fielder’s choice, and came around on a two-out single by Dave Webb.

Coal Grove plays at Fairland Thursday in an OVC game.
