Customers may recycle used motor oil and automotive batteries for free at the Ironton Advance Auto Parts store located at 1218 S. Third St.
Discarding these items in trash containers, pouring them down drains or taking them to landfills are hazardous disposal methods that contaminate soil and groundwater while polluting the oceans and atmosphere.
Since the program began nationally, Advance has recycled more than 5 million gallons of used engine oil, with nearly 2 million recycled in 1999.

The board of American Electric Power recently declared a regular quarterly dividend of 60 cents a share on the company’s common stock.
The dividend is payable June 9 to shareholders of record as of May 10 and is the company’s 360th consecutive quarterly common stock cash dividend.

Ashland, Ky., will celebrate National Historic Preservation Week May 14-20 with a day of activities Saturday, May 13.
Events that day include:
1-2 p.m.: Scott Walters, architect, will be at the Boyd County Library to discuss architecture of homes and commercial buildings. Residents may bring photographs of their home or building and participate in the program.
2-3 p.m.: Historic tour of Bath Avenue will be presented by Jim Powers. The day concludes with a tour of the Mayo Mansion.

As part of the Genesis Hospital System to unify the administrative structure of West Virginia-area hospitals, the following changes have been announced:
W. Don Smith II is retiring as CEO of Cabell Huntington Hospital effective June 30. He relinquished his position as co-CEO of Genesis Hospital System effective April 30.
J. Thomas Jones was named chief executive officer of Genesis effective May 1 and has relinquished his responsibilities as executive director/CEO of St. Mary’s Hospital.
Recruitment has begun to replace Jones at St. Mary’s and Smith at Cabell Huntington. A site selection committee also has been named to search for suitable facilities to house Genesis corporate offices.
Formed in 1997, Genesis is a 970-bed, three-hospital affiliation consisting of Cabell Huntington and St. Mary’s in Huntington and Pleasant Valley Hospital in Point Pleasant. Genesis officials expect that Logan General Hospital, on emergency from bankruptcy, will join the group.

The Forest Service is looking for on-the-job training work sites for older workers. The Forest Service has a special employment and training program funded by the U.S. Department of Labor, with one of the program’s main objectives to place older workers into private sector employment.
Jane Lane Craddock, job developer with the Workforce Development Resource Center, 120 N. Third St., Ironton, said the center is authorized to enter into training arrangements with employers and to reimburse employers for 50 percent of the salary of the participant for the first month of on-the-job training.
Participants of the Senior Community Service Employment Program must be 55 years of age or older and meet the low-income guideline. The Forest Service certifies participants, pays for their pre-employment physical and handles all administrative tasks of the program.
Employers provide a work or learning experience that prepares the participant to be a profitable employee. While working under the company’s supervision, the company is responsible for payroll, worker’s compensation coverage and billing the Forest Service for 50 percent of the participant’s salary expense.

The Workforce Development Resource Center also has a posting for street maintenance workers for Upper Arlington, located north of Columbus.
Duties include operating a wide range of motorized and heavy equipment, using specialized tools, performing general maintenance and repair, including concrete finishing and pavement maintenance.
Qualified applicants must have a commercial driver’s license and two years of experience operating mechanical equipment and completing various maintenance assignments. Wage is $12.50 per hour plus excellent benefits.
