Northwest 11, Rock Hill 1 McDERMOTT – The number 13 was definitely unlucky for the Rock Hill Redmen.
Walks and errors led to 13 extra runners as the Northwest Mohawks beat the Redmen 11-1 in six innings Thursday in the Division II sectional tournament game.
"You make five errors and walk eight people, it catches up with you. You can’t put 13 runners on and not expect it to hurt you," Rock Hill coach Wes Hairston said. "You can’t give teams four and five outs an inning. But some of that is youth and inexperience on our part."
The five errors Rock Hill committed led to five unearned runs.
A walk, a throwing error, two more walks, and a two-run single, and an RBI single put Northwest up 3-0 in the first. The Mohawks added another run in the third.
Northwest scored five runs in the fourth and added a run in the fifth on a walk, a sacrifice, a wild pitch, and a base hit.
Rock Hill got its only run in the fifth when Tanner Heaberlin doubled and scored on a dropped fly ball.
The Mohawks got their final run in the sixth to end the game. Rock Hill’s Tyler Virgin tried to prevent the premature end of the game when on a base hit he threw out a runner at home who was on third base, but a bloop single eventually sent home the 11th run.
"Northwest has a pretty good hitting team and their pitcher keeps you off-balance, but we had some opportunities to score and didn’t capitalize," said Hairston.
