ROME TOWNSHIP – When this year’s Lawrence County Fair headline music act takes the stage, there will be plenty of fans in the audience who can sing along.
Fair Board members announced this week that the country group, Exile, will perform at this year’s festivities, which are scheduled for July 9-15.
Exile is scheduled to hit the stage around 7 p.m. Friday, July 14.
And Fair Board president Doug Clark that will make quite a traffic jam for fairgoers eager to get a seat as close to the stage as possible.
"They’re good," Clark said. "What we have (this year) is a group, and as a rule, groups do draw bigger crowds."
And Exile is not the only treat for country music lovers that evening.
Singer/songwriter Paul Pace and 20-year-old singer Amy Chaney will be the opening acts.
WTCR program music coordinator Chuck Black, whose station is sponsoring the music at this year’s fair, said listeners are in for a treat.
"Amy is probably one of the most beautiful, talented people we’ve had here in a long time," Black said.
Ms. Chaney has performed at stage festivals for about two years, he added.
Pace, a past winner of WTCR’s "Showdown," has been performing shows in this area for about 10 years.
"He’s one of the best country voices around," Black said. "He’s been recording in Nashville for about three or four years."
Both Ms. Chaney and Pace are natives of Boyd County, Ky.
Exile is no stranger to the spotlight.
The group has been performing for more than 30 years.
Featured in the group are founding members J.P. Pennington on vocals and lead guitar, and Les Taylor singing with Pennington and backing him up on rhythm guitar.
"Exile had a hit in the ’70s called ‘Kiss You All Over,’ and later had 11 No. 1 songs throughout the ’80s," Black said. "In addition to that, they’ve written 10 to 12 No. 1 songs for other country acts and they will perform a medley of those songs as well."
Originally from Lexington, Ky., Exile will perform a 90-minute set.
"Exile is in our gold rotation and (WTCR) plays (their songs) every couple of days," Black said. "We get requests for Exile, especially for ‘Kiss You All Over.’
"They’re high energy – a good act. It will be a good night of country music."
