SOUTH POINT – A quick start allowed Brent Terry to make a quick impression.
The South Point Pointers jumped out to a 26-0 first quarter lead and gave Terry a win in his coaching debut in a 42-6 rout of the Vinton County Vikings Friday night.
Terry was making his head coaching debut against a team that had beaten the Pointers handily last season. He was apprehensive entering the game, but excited to get the win.
"It was nice to get that first win. We were pretty nervous. We’re just glad the kids came out and played hard and things went so well," Terry said.
"We played pretty well. We executed like you’d want to. Things went better than we could have ever expected. We jumped on them quick and that was a big key."
The Pointers rolled up 339 total yards. David Chapman ran nine times for 98 yards and three touchdowns, D. J. Bryant carried seven times for 62 yards and a score, and quarterback Jarrod Smith completed 6 of 8 pass for 113 yards and two touchdowns.
The defense limited Vinton County to 146 yards, all on the ground.
"Offensively, D. J. and Chapman ran the ball well. Jarrod did a nice job. He got us out of a lot of situations," Terry said. "The defense executed well. Any time you play an option team you’ve got to play assignment football, and the kids picked up on things in practice pretty well and did a nice job of applying it tonight. I’m very happy.
South Point scored on its opening drive by going 67 yards in 10 plays. Chapman bolted the final 22 yards for the score and Coleman Gorby’s conversion kick made it 7-0.
The Pointers came right back to score again on a 20-yard pass from Smith and it was 13-0 with 5:59 on the clock.
South Point recovered a Viking fumble on the first play of the next series and turned it into a quick score as Chapman ripped through the defense for 29 yards. Gorby’s kick pushed the lead to 20-0.
After a Viking punt, the Pointers went 44 yards in just three plays capped by Shane Holsinger’s 36-yard touchdown run and it was 26-0.
The next South Point possession produced a 49-yard, four-play drive that end on a 4-yard scoring pass from Smith to Bryant and produced a 33-0 halftime lead.
South Point went up 40-0 early in the third quarter on a 6-yard run by Chapman at the 10:02 mark.
Moments later Colton Copley tackled Vikings quarterback Tim Bethel in the end zone for a safety and it was 42-0.
Vinton County avoided the shutout as Josh Johnson ran 7 yards for a touchdown with just 55 seconds to play.
