With the steel industry in turmoil, a shot in the arm would be a good remedy.
Earlier this week, Gov. George Voinovich wrote a letter to Defense Secretary William Cohen asking if the Pentagon has a plan in place that would ensure there will be enough steel to meet the demands of the Defense Department.
As domestic steel producers continue to struggle and cease operations, it is essential that the federal government and lawmakers take a closer look at what can be done to keep these companies afloat. Otherwise, thousands upon thousands of jobs will be lost.
It’s too late for Intermet, which met with struggle at least in part because of a slowdown in steel orders.
But a boost from the feds can help others.
