SOUTH POINT – Tara Layne pitched a 3-hitter and South Point scored three runs in the sixth inning to beat the Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers 3-1 Wednesday.

Layne struck out eight in going the distance. Ashley Leighty went 2-for-3, Allison Perdue 1-3 with two runs batted in, and Sarah Baise doubled to lead the Pointers.

‘We’re just not hitting the ball right now like we did last year. The girls hit the ball pretty good (Wednedsday), we just didn’t find the holes," Ironton coach Pete McCloud.

Katie Kelley struck out four and allowed seven hits in taking the loss. Ashley McCloud doubled for one of the Ironton hits.

Ironton, 1-2, hosts Russell, Ky., Friday.
