Lady Dragons win sectional title
PROCTORVILLE - It took a year, but the Fairland Lady Dragons got their revenge.
Fairland lost to Oak Hill in the district tournament last season. The Lady Dragons turned the tables on Oak Hill Tuesday as they beat the Lady Oaks 12-1.
"We hit it and Jessica threw well," Fairland coach Leroy Baise said.
Fairland had 20 hits led by Jennifer Jones who was 4-5 with a double and three runs batted in while Megan Fisher was 4-4 with two RBI.
Kelly Curry and Holly Black each went 3-3 and Kristen Clausing 2-4 with an RBI as Fairland banged out 20 hits.
Jessica Mann picked up the win as she pitched a four-hitter, struck out six and walked only two.
Fairland, 16-4, plays at 5 p.m. Monday at Minford in the district semifinals against Portsmouth West which beat Eastern Brown 2-0.
After a scoreless first inning, Curry walked, Kristen Brumfield singled, Black sacrificed the runners, Mandy Clark singled in Curry, and Jones singled home Brumfield.
Fairland came back to score five runs in the fourth to lead 7-0.
Black singled, Clark hit into a fielder's choice, and Jones and Fisher singled for a run. Kate Nida and Clausing each had RBI singles, and Kristen Berry hit into a fielder's choice as Nida scored. Curry capped the rally with a run-scoring single.
Oak Hill managed to score a run in the fifth, but the Lady Dragons got five more runs in the sixth inning.
Clausing, Curry and Black all singled to score the first run. Clark singled to load the bases and Jones unloaded a three-run double. Fisher finished off the uprising with a base hit to score Jones.
The win also marked a milestone for the Fairland seniors.
The Lady Dragon seniors are now 76-15 in their careers, thus making them the winningest senior class during their four-year careers at Fairland. The group has won three Ohio Valley Conference titles and finished second their freshman season.
Jones, Mann and Black are the three seniors to play all four years. Other senior members are Meagan Kramer and Kristen Brumfield.
"That's hard to do. But then you don't have players like Jones, Mann and Black every day for four years," Baise said. "It's something they can be proud of."
