An Ironton Fire Department firefighter douses flames at an upstairs apartment on Fourth Street. The blaze broke out about 1 p.m. after a lit candle ignited a bed at 804 1/2 S. Fourth St., IFD investigator Jim Monte said. The apartment’s resident – Thelma Lewis – suffered a burn on one hand, Monte said. Southeast Ohio Emergency Medical Service personnel checked her out at the scene but did not transport her to the hospital, he said. The bedroom was heavily damaged, five pet birds died and the downstairs apartment suffered minor water damage as a result of the fire, Monte said. The IFD responded with two trucks and nine crew members. While on scene there, the department received another fire call at 1:07 p.m., Monte said. Firefighters responded to a grease fire at the home of Jewell and Dave Hackworth, 312 Pearl St., but the fire had been extinguished upon arrival, he said. Firefighters removed smoke from the house and checked for damage.
