Three Lawrence County students will travel to Athens to compete in Ohio University’s American History contest.
Symmes Valley High School’s Joseph Plessinger, along with Ironton High School’s Seth Lewis and Matthew Nierman, were the top scorers in the county on the university’s test.
Murray Greenstein, a history teacher at Ironton High School, explained the American history department at OU administers the test, given mostly to high school juniors and seniors. He said the standardized test covers most topics in American history. He said questions range from political, social, economic and military components of US history.
Greenstein said about 9,300 Ohio students took the 80-question, multiple-choice test with 279 earning the right to further compete at OU.
The university offers full-tuition scholarships as one of the top prizes.
