PEDRO – It was a good start. The Fairland Dragons got off to a good start in the game and in the Ohio Valley Conference with a 72-63 win over the Rock Hill Redmen Friday in the league opener for both teams.

Darren Colburn got the Dragons off to a quick start as he scored eight of Fairland’s first 10 points and it was 22-10 at the end of the quarter.

David Schug scored 11 points the second quarter as Rock Hill managed to cut into the lead by halftime at 36-25.

Dru Brooks had seven points the third quarter as Fairland led by as many as 20 points and held a 52-36 lead at the end of the period.

Chris Dinwiddie scored 11 points for Fairland the fourth quarter, but Rock Hill got 11 points from Isaac Kitchen and Schug added nine more to narrow the gap. But Fairland held on for its fourth win in eight games.

Dinwiddie finished with 23 points and Brooks scored 19 to lead the Dragons. Colburn pulled down nine rebounds, Dinwiddie had five rebounds and three steals, and Brooks had three steals.

Schug scored a game-high 27 points to lead Rock Hill. Kitchen finished with 16 points and Roger Joseph added 11.

In the reserve game, Fairland won 40-38 as Matt Rowe scored 12 points and Kendall Staggs eight. Shawn Mullins had 11 points and Derrick Martin 10 for Rock Hill.

On Tuesday, Fairland plays at Coal Grove while Rock Hill travels to Chesapeake.
