It was like a car in the Daytona 500. It ran hard, but then it just ran out of gas short of the finish line.

The St. Joe Flyers found two tough games on back-to-back nights was too much for their legs as they lost 65-52 to the Sciotoville East Tartans Saturday night.

After upsetting Green i a hard-fought game on Friday night, the Flyers trailed just 39-37 heading into the final quarter when East began to pull away.

East played Friday but breezed 75-36 over Portsmouth Notre Dame.

"They beat us to the loose balls, they beat us to the boards, they beat us off the dribble, and they hit their shots. We just didn’t have any legs," Flyers coach Adam Simpson. "We just ran out of gas at the end and they looked a lot fresher."

Bill Dressel scored 24 points to lead the Flyers including four 3-pointers. He also had six rebounds and two assists.

Chris Laber had a big game with 18 points and 11 rebounds while Danny Stack handed out 10 assists.

Matt Oster, Lyle Allard, and Josh Hoskins scored 15 points each for East.

Dressel and Allard matched each other with five points the first quarter as East took an 11-7 lead.

In the second quarter, Dressel scored eight more points and Laber added six as the Flyers got within 26-25 at the half.

East held a 39-37 lead despite six points by Dressel in the third quarter. The Tartans then exploded for 26 points the fourth quarter as Allard had 10 points, Oster eight and Hoskins six.

Laber and Dressel combined for 11 of the Flyers 15 points.

"They just got the lead, we had to foul, and that was the ball game," Simpson said. "We couldn’t guard them late in the game. We don’t have any excuses. They just beat us."

St. Joe plays South Gallia Monday at 7 p.m. in the Division IV sectional tournament at Albany Alexander. The two teams split their regular season series.
