No need to extradite.

Thursday, former SSP Credit Union treasurer Doug Calhoun turned himself in to Lawrence County authorities.

Calhoun was to have appeared in Greenup County Circuit Court next week to face possible extradition and arraignment, but will instead appear again in Municipal Court in Ironton next Thursday for a preliminary hearing.

Municipal Court Judge Clark Collins set a $100,000 cash bond. Calhoun was shortly thereafter taken to the Lawrence County Jail.

Calhoun, 60, of Russell, Ky., was arrested late last week on a theft by deception charge. This is an F-3 felony, which means Calhoun could get a 1- to 5-year prison sentence if he is convicted.

He is accused of taking money from the now-defunct financial institution while he worked there.

Earlier this week, the Ohio Department of Commerce declared the SSP Credit Union "insolvent and unsafe" and brought in American Share Insurance to liquidate the credit union's assets. Teresa Moore/The Ironton Tribune
