A Huntington, W.Va. man and a Proctorville man have been arrested in connection with the theft of numerous articles from property in Scottown.
Bruce Ward, 26, of 3244 Woodland Drive, Huntington, W.Va. and Billy Scarberry, no age given, of 404 1/2 State St., Proctorville were each charged with breaking and entering.
William Long, of 23 State Route 218, Scottown, told Lawrence County Sheriff’s deputies that his home had recently burned down and he had been storing some of his belongings in outbuildings on his property. Long said that his outbuildings had been broken into twice in the last couple of weeks and a neighbor had identified a possible suspect.
Long provided deputies and members of the Proctorville Police Department with a detailed list of items taken, and accompanied authorities to Scarberry’s home at 404 1/2 State street.
The items Long had listed as missing were allegedly recovered from an automobile and from Scarberry’s residence.
Both Scarberry and Ward allegedly admitted to authorities they took the items on two occasions.
Ward also allegedly admitted to taking items from the porch of another home on Bent Creek Road. That home had also suffered recent fire damage.
Long told authorities that the missing items amounted to about $15,000. He also estimated that approximately $12,000 worth of items were recovered in the search.
The list of items at issue include jewelry, tools, a quilt and other household goods, fishing gear, rods and reels, a coffee maker, shotgun shells, a Coleman heater, a cassette player and stereo speakers, a dome tent, binoculars and a pager.
Both men appeared Tuesday morning in Lawrence County Municipal Court. Judge Donald Capper set bond for each man at $7,500.
Both men will appear in court for a preliminary hearing June 3. Both men remained in the Lawrence County jail as of Monday mid day. Teresa Moore/The Ironton Tribune
