Store employees help authorities nab a crook

Usually they just ring up your purchase and bag your groceries. But Monday, employees of the Foodland store in the KMart Plaza at Charley Creek Road turned into heroes for a South Point lady.

Wanda Clark told Lawrence County Sheriff’s deputies she had taken her mother, Claudia Smith, to the store to buy groceries. While they were there, a man grabbed Smith’s billfold out of her purse and ran out of the store.

He was apprehended on the sidewalk by Foodland manager Marshall Hensley and employee Patrick Rowsey, who held the man until authorities arrived.

Isaac Crabtree, 30, of 1420 Hall St., Huntington, W.Va., is charged with theft and two counts of assault for allegedly biting Rowsey and Hensley in attempt to flee the scene. He was taken to the Lawrence County jail.

Authorities are looking for a woman who allegedly tried to help Crabtree flee by hitting Hensley and Rowsey while they had a hold of Crabtree. Teresa Moore/The Ironton Tribune
