Police probing passing of counterfit bill

It had Andrew Jackson’s face on it and it read "legal tender," but the bartender at the American Legion had reservations Saturday about whether the bill in her hand was a real $20.

It wasn't. Now, Ironton police are looking into who might have manufactured the money.

The bartender told police she was handed the money by a patron. When questioned, the patron said they got the money from someone else.

"It's not a real good job," Capt. Chris Bowman, Ironton Police Department detective said as he was handling the counterfeit $20 bill. "The color is off, for one thing. You've really got to play with it to make it look good."

The $20 bill is more blue-green in color than the standard green used by the U.S. Treasury, Bowman said. This bill is also slightly crooked and also, it lacks a watermark.

The fake cash was probably made with a photocopier, Bowman added.

He added the currency will likely be sent to the U.S. Secret Service for

investigation.

"We get them occasionally," Bowman said. "Usually it's 20s. Sometimes you get 100s or 50s, but usually it's 20s."

Bowman said anyone who gets a bill they suspect is fake should contact their local law enforcement agency for

investigation. Teresa Moore/The Ironton Tribune
