Although the Ironton City Council supports naming the planned Russell-Ironton Bridge the John Campbell Memorial Bridge, Ironton's founding father, they tabled a resolution of support Thursday until they could receive some public input.
"I favor it," Councilman Richard Price said.
"It is a very good name for the bridge but we have five years so we can wait one meeting to allow the public to voice their opinion."
The name was proposed local historian, Virginia Bryant and supported by the Lawrence County Commission.
If passed, the resolution will be submitted to the state legislature and the Ohio Department of Transportation. The official naming will have to be passed by the state legislature.
"John Campbell has been part of our history since day one," Mayor Bob Cleary said. "It is only fitting the bridge be named after him."
In other business, Council approved Mayor Cleary's nomination of Tony Crowe to the Recreation Board for a four-year term.
Council approved a resolution supporting Ironton High Schools application for grant funds to make improvements to historical Tanks Memorial Stadium.
Council tabled an ordinance that would allow for bed and breakfasts to be established in residential districts within the city. Some language and questions about amending the ordinance will be discussed before the ordinance is sent to the zoning committee for a public hearing.
