Christmas was not a joyous time for everyone as a house fire at 1824 S. Third St. gutted the home and kept firefighters from the Ironton Fire Department busy for more than four hours Wednesday evening.

Thirteen firefighters from Ironton battled the blaze that began at approximately 8 p.m., and did not clear the scene until 12:42 a.m., Capt. Steve Lewis said.

Lewis said no one was hurt and that he did not believe the owner, Carl Colegrove, was home at the time. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Although the home is still standing, the damage was extensive, he said. The fire was contained before it could spread to any of the neighboring homes.

The Coal Grove Volunteer Fire Department assisted by providing back-up air for firefighters' breathing equipment.
