MINFORD -- One bad turn deserved another.

Each time the Minford Lady Falcons turned the ball over, the Chesapeake Lady Panthers would do the same. As a results, Minford slipped past Chesapeake 51-48 Monday in a non-league game.

Minford had 30 turnovers while Chesapeake was guilty of 28 miscues.

"We did a good job defensively with our pressure forcing turnovers, but every time we'd get one, we'd do something wrong and give it right back. We keep making sophomore mistakes," Chesapeake coach Chad Belville said.

Joy Mayenchein hit a pair of 3-pointers as Chesapeake opened the game with an 8-0 run. Brittany Boyle scored 3 points and Lisa Perry scored 5 points to help build the early lead.

Boyle turned an ankle early in the game and did not return. With Boyle out, Minford's Jessica James scored 9 straight points to key a 13-0 run and erase the Chesapeake lead.

"The injury hurt us. Minford was bigger than us, so to lose (Boyle) made a difference. But give Minford credit. We came out hot and they answered," Belville said.

Minford led 28-22 at the half. Chesapeake got within 28-25 on a 3-pointer by Perry to start the third quarter, but Minford outscored Chesapeake 19-8 the rest of the quarter to take a 47-33 lead.

"We got good looks or fouled, but we weren't hitting anything. We had a bunch of turnovers the third quarter and they hurt us on the boards. That was the difference in the game," Belville said.

Minford led by as many as 16 the fourth quarter, but Perry scored 11 of her points as the Lady Panthers attempted to rally.

"Lisa is really starting to shoot the ball well," Belville said of Perry.

Chesapeake (1-7) was led by Perry with 23 points, five steals, and five rebounds. Mayenchein scored 12 points and Delimpo grabbed 10 rebounds.

James led Minford with 16 points. Kristen Martin had 14.

On Saturday, Chesapeake won its first game by holding off the Vinton County Lady Vikings 41-39 in the consolation game of the Logan Holiday Classic.

The Lady Panthers trailed 17-12 at the half, then outscored Vinton County 13-4 in the third quarter to take command of the game.

"We pressed them and got on a run in the third quarter," Belville said. "But we had a lot of clutch free throws down the stretch. It was good to get our first win."

Perry made 6 of 10 from the line in the fourth quarter, and Joanna Delimpo had 4 of her 5 points as Chesapeake held off the Lady Vikings.

Perry, who had 20 points in the win, was named to the all-tournament team.

FRANKLIN FURNACE -- You can't give them something for nothing.

The Portsmouth Clay Lady Panthers converted only 12 of 22 free throws, but it was enough to maintain a 60-48 win over the Green Lady Bobcats Monday in a Southern Ohio Conference game.

Conversely, Green made just 3 of 5 foul shots.

"We kept putting them at the line. It was a factor in the game," Green coach Melissa Knapp said.

"We shot better than we have all year. Chelsea Pierce is just a freshman and she had a good game. Our young girls stepped up tonight."

Emily Broughton scored 16 points to lead three Clay players in double figures. Sarah Shaffer had 14 points and Katie Duduit scored 12.

Samantha Jenkins led Green with 15 points. Leigh Ann Williams scored 11 and Chelsey Pierce added 10.

Chelsey Pierce was filling in for Meagan Pierce, the team's second leading scorer who missed the game due to an illness.

Shaffer scored 7 points the first quarter as Clay took an 18-12 lead.

Jenkins had 8 points the second quarter as Green got within 31-27 at the half.

But Green fell behind 46-39 after three quarters and scored just 9 points in the fourth quarter.

'We get the offense one game and the defense the next. We just need to put it all together," Knapp said.
